If you’re just getting started on your roof replacement plans, you should know right off the bat that it will be messy. If you have a well-maintained yard and exterior, you have to take steps in making sure they’re protected while your roof is being replaced. In today’s post, the asphalt roofing contractors Austin Pro Siding, Windows & Roofing shares tips on how to protect your home’s exterior during roof installation.
1. Inspect your home’s exterior before installation begins — Inspect your home’s exterior a few days before installation begins. You might not end up using them if you have a capable roofing contractor, but photos and videos of your home just before the project begins may be helpful in case of a workmanship warranty claim or a similar dispute.
2. Talk to your roofing contractor — If you have concerns about anything that relates to your upcoming roof installation, discuss them with your roof repair and installation contractor. Chances are, your roofer may already have solutions in place for preventing damage to siding, landscaping and other parts of your home’s exterior. During your discussion, don’t forget to mention areas that will require extra care.
3. Define paths and work areas — Another thing you should discuss with your roofing contractor is the work areas. Parts of your yard will be needed for storage and staging, as well as placement for the dumpsters where discarded roofing materials are going to be collected. Contact with plants can be kept to a minimum by keeping foot traffic to certain areas and covering them with boards.
4. Do not lay tarpaulin directly over plants — Most people drape tarpaulin or similar materials over their plants. While this works on grass and paths, they might damage bushes and similar plants. Instead, install framing or canopies over the plants to allow air circulation and additional protection against falling debris. This is especially important if the roof installation will take more than a day.
