Common Window and Door Problems During Winter

Winter can be a lot of fun for those who love cold temperatures, but it sure won’t be for windows and doors. These home elements often get damaged by the cold weather, resulting in some problems that need to be addressed as soon as possible.

In this post, window installers from Austin Pro Siding, Windows & Roofing discuss some of the most common problems affecting windows and doors during winter, and how these problems can be fixed.

Warping

Windows and doors can warp during wintertime. Exposure to moisture and changes in the weather and temperatures can cause windows and doors to expand, contract or warp. This results in poor window and door performance.

Warped windows will allow warm indoor air to leak outside, and also allow cold outdoor air to enter the home. This will result in colder and less comfortable interiors, which will lead to more heating demand, which ultimately leads to increased energy bills.

Warped or binding doors are more annoying. These doors don’t close easily and tend to become vulnerable to more maintenance and performance issues. And because they don’t fit squarely along the jamb, they will allow indoor air to leak outside, and outdoor air to enter in.

While binding doors can be fixed by replacing the screws on the hinges, warped windows will need to be replaced with new ones. Homeowners will need to contact reliable window replacement contractors for the job.

Doors Won’t Close

As mentioned, doors might bind during cold winter weather. Binding doors won’t fit on the jamb and will be difficult to close at times. This can be fixed by re-drilling to install larger screws on the hinges, or by using shims.  Recurring door closing issues can be fixed entirely by replacing the door and frame.

Worn-Out Weather Stripping

Weatherstripping is meant to block outside air from entering through gaps along the door. Drafts felt around the door indicate that the weather stripping needs to be replaced. It’s not difficult to replace the stripping, but those who aren’t confident about it can simply ask door and window installers to do it for them.
