Are you taking good care of your windows? Some homeowners may think so, but could actually do more harm than good to their windows because they have developed bad maintenance habits. Our window installers point out which habits are the worst offenders so you can avoid them when caring for your windows.

Using Storm Windows Along With Low-E Windows

Low-E windows are designed to deflect part of the heat coming from outside. If you install storm windows (or leave them attached even after the storm) over them, the heat deflected by the low-E glass will just end up bouncing back on the inner side of the storm windows. This can cause heat to build up and cause damage such as warping or cracking of sealants.

Power Washing Walls Around the Window

Some homeowners use power washers to clean their home’s siding. This can be a problem when they are cleaning  areas around the window where debris can get blown into the glass surface and frame material. Window replacement contractors generally recommend laying off the power washers and using a regular hose to spray the areas close to the window.

Forgetting Hard-to-Reach Areas

Some window areas are rather difficult to clean, especially narrow rails and corners. Because of this, some homeowners tend to leave out inaccessible areas when cleaning their windows. This is a common cause of debris buildup that can lead to other problems later on, so it’s important to make sure every nook and cranny is cleaned.

Trying to DIY Every Maintenance Task

Some window maintenance tasks have to be left to the pros. Unfortunately, many homeowners try to “save” on professional fees, which usually ends up with windows getting further damaged with botch repair attempts. Just like with hiring roofers to get the roof fixed, it’s important to hire certified experts for more technical window maintenance work.
