What Causes Your Wood Doors to Expand and Contract?

Have you noticed that your doors become larger on humid days? Usually, your front and bathroom doors have the snuggest fit in your home because they are more exposed to moisture. This is because wood tends to swell and expand.

Door and window replacement contractors share reasons your wood doors expand and contract.

Excessive Moisture

Too much moisture and the lack of water-repellent finish can cause your doors to swell. Moisture can penetrate your wood doors, especially from the bottom edge, when they aren’t sealed or finished properly.

Heat and Humidity

Changes in heat and humidity levels can result in wood expansion and contraction. Wood is naturally porous and without protection or waterproofing, it will absorb all the moisture it can, causing it to swell and expand. Under warm, moist conditions, wood doors can push against the frames, get stuck or become difficult to open and close.

The swelling may reduce as moisture evaporates from the door, depending on the kind of wood. However, sometimes, the wood doesn’t go back to its original state. You may need to sand or plane the door sash when this occurs. You must be careful not to sand too much or else, there will be gaps that could reduce the door’s energy efficiency. If your door is old and the problem persists, it may be best to invest in a new one. At Austin Pros, you can rely on our experienced door and window installers for excellent door replacement services.

Your Climate

Where your door is installed and your climate can contribute to door swelling. Doors in the southern and western areas receive more sun, which can affect their finish. Your wood door will eventually start to swell when it doesn’t have enough protection.
