Siding

James Hardie

This Cherrywood project called for a full siding replacement on an older Austin home. We installed James Hardie 8.25" Smooth in Primed Select Cedar Mill, a fiber cement board built for local heat and hail. Behind it, we added Zip System wall sheathing to seal and protect the structure. The result is a low-maintenance exterior that keeps the home's classic cedar look.

Exterior Painting

Sherwin Williams

The exterior painting phase covered the new siding plus fascia, skirting, stairs, and both doors. We used Sherwin Williams coatings chosen to resist fading under strong Central Texas sun. Gutters, downspouts, and garage doors were painted for a unified finish. New vinyl gable vents were replaced and coated to blend in cleanly.

First Contact

The homeowner found Austin Pro through an internet search and reached out on February 22, 2023. They were dealing with worn cedar siding on their Cherrywood home and wanted a lasting fix rather than another repaint. We moved the conversation to a prospect stage within days, by February 27.

Evaluation

During the assessment, we inspected the failing wood siding, the fascia, and the gable vents. We flagged soft, splitting boards and noted the aging wall sheathing hidden underneath. We also identified a brick section and planter that needed removal to clean up the wall line.

PLanning & Approval

We built an estimate around James Hardie 8.25" Smooth siding, Zip System sheathing, and a full Sherwin Williams repaint. The homeowner reviewed material and finish options through the spring. The project was approved on June 30, 2023.

Installation

Crews removed the old cedar, brick, and planter, then installed Zip System sheathing for a sealed wall base. The James Hardie board went up in the Primed Select Cedar Mill profile over several days in late fall. The paint crew followed, coating siding, fascia, skirting, stairs, doors, gutters, and the new vinyl gable vents.

Completion

We ran two yard cleanups and a dedicated punch pass to finish every detail. Final punch items and the last touches wrapped on November 30, 2023, when the project was invoiced.

We stripped the failing cedar siding off this Cherrywood home, installed James Hardie fiber cement, and repainted the full exterior in one coordinated project. The result is a tighter, tougher wall system that keeps the home's original character.

Why did this Cherrywood home need new siding?

The old wood cedar siding had reached the end of its life. Cracks, soft spots, and years of Austin sun had worn it down. Repainting alone would have just hidden the damage for a season or two.

  • Original cedar boards were splitting and holding moisture
  • A brick section and a planter were removed to clean up the wall line
  • Vinyl gable vents were rotted and needed full replacement
  • The homeowner wanted the cedar look without the constant upkeep

What did we find once we opened up the walls?

Pulling the old siding told the real story of this house. Behind the boards, the sheathing was tired and no longer sealing the wall the way it should. That is a common find on Austin homes from this era, where decades of heat cycles and driving rain slowly work the structure loose. We made the call to install Zip System sheathing instead of patching the old substrate. It gives you a built-in air and water barrier in one layer, which matters a lot during our sudden spring storms. Skipping that step is the mistake most homeowners never see coming, because the new siding looks fine on day one while moisture quietly does its work behind it.

Why James Hardie fiber cement for this project?

We chose James Hardie 8.25" Smooth in Primed Select Cedar Mill for one main reason: it survives Central Texas. Fiber cement does not warp in 100°-plus heat, and it shrugs off hail that would dent or crack lesser materials. The Cedar Mill texture keeps the woodgrain character the homeowner loved about the original cedar.

  • Board delivered through ABC Supply Co. for the fiber cement run
  • Primed Select finish gave us a clean base for paint
  • Smooth 8.25" profile matched the home's existing scale
  • Cedar pollen and grime wipe off far easier than they did on raw wood

How did the exterior painting come together?

Once the new siding was up, the painting phase brought the whole home into one look. We used Sherwin Williams coatings picked to hold color under harsh Austin sun. Every exterior surface got attention, not just the walls.

  • Painted fascia, skirting, and the exterior stairs
  • Coated the gutters and downspouts by the linear foot
  • Painted both entry doors and the garage doors
  • New vinyl gable vents were painted to match the body color

How long did the whole job take?

The siding and paint phases each ran over several days in late fall. Crews worked the fiber cement install first, then moved to full paint coverage. Two rounds of yard cleanup and punch work closed things out in November.

  • Siding install completed before the paint crew mobilized
  • Two yard cleanups plus a dedicated punch-out pass
  • Final punch items wrapped by November 30, 2023
  • Electrical support handled by a licensed local contractor

Frequently asked questions

Is fiber cement worth it over new wood siding in Austin?

Yes, especially on an older home. Wood needs constant sealing and still splits under heat and hail, while James Hardie fiber cement holds its shape and finish for far longer. You spend less time and money maintaining it season after season.

Why replace the sheathing instead of reusing it?

The original substrate had lost its ability to seal the wall against water and air. Installing Zip System sheathing gave the home a fresh weather barrier under the new siding. It is the kind of upgrade you only get one clean shot at.

What did this Cherrywood siding and paint project cost?

This retail project fell in the $20k–$25k range. That covered full siding replacement, sheathing, brick and planter removal, new gable vents, and a complete exterior repaint.

How long is the work protected?

James Hardie backs its fiber cement products with a strong manufacturer warranty, and Sherwin Williams coatings carry their own coverage. Our team also returned for punch items to make sure every detail met the standard before we closed the file.
