Why did this Milwood home need new siding?

Milwood is full of homes built in the 1980s and 1990s, and their original siding rarely holds up this long. Decades of 100-degree summers, spring hail, and cedar pollen take a real toll on older exterior materials.

What did the crew find on site?

Once we opened up sections of the old exterior, we planned for full sheathing replacement rather than a quick cover-up. Behind aging siding you often find sheathing that has softened over the years, and cutting corners there just traps the same problems inside the wall.

We installed new 7/16-inch OSB wall sheathing across the affected areas to give the Hardie board a flat, solid nailing surface. That step matters more than most homeowners realize. Fiber cement is only as good as what sits behind it, and a wavy or weak substrate shows through the finished wall. We also removed and framed in an old gable vent that was no longer needed, cleaning up the roofline in the process.

What materials did we use, and why?

We went with James Hardie HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill in the 8.25-inch profile. Fiber cement is the standard we recommend across Austin because it does not warp, rot, or feed termites the way wood and older products can.

The 8.25-inch lap gives a bold, clean shadow line that suits these Milwood homes. Its primed surface also takes paint beautifully, which set up the finish coat perfectly.

How did the exterior painting go?

After the siding was set, we coated the whole exterior with Sherwin Williams SuperPaint. Painting primed Hardie board seals the surface and locks the color in against harsh Texas UV.

We did not stop at the walls. The finish work pulled every surface into one consistent look.
