First Contact

The homeowner reached out through our website on January 10, 2023. They were looking to update an aging East Austin exterior with a cleaner, more durable material. We talked through siding options and set up a visit.

Evaluation

By January 17 the project had moved to the prospect stage. We inspected the existing cladding and found worn, moisture-damaged material typical of older 78702 homes. That confirmed fiber cement was the right replacement.

Planning & Approval

The homeowner approved the scope on January 25, 2023. We finalized the James Hardie board and batten selection and chose Sherwin Williams Nebulous White for the finish. Materials were coordinated through our suppliers, including ABC Supply Co.

Installation

The crew installed the board and batten siding over several days in mid-April. We kept the vertical battens plumb and evenly spaced across the facade. After the cladding was sealed, we returned to paint the full exterior.

Completion

We wrapped the painting and completed the project on May 3, 2023. The final walkthrough confirmed clean lines, sealed edges, and an even Nebulous White finish. The job closed on May 25, 2023.

What did we find when we inspected the home?

When the crew walked the exterior, the story was familiar for this part of town. Older wood-based cladding had swelled and warped in spots where moisture had crept behind it. Central Texas swings hard between dry heat and sudden storms, and that cycle slowly wrecks wood siding. Limestone-heavy soil and shifting foundations had also opened small gaps at a few corners. Fiber cement was the clear fix, because it does not rot, feed pests, or soak up water the way the old material did.

How did the installation and painting go?

We set the siding over multiple days in mid-April, working panel by panel to keep the battens straight and evenly spaced. Getting the vertical lines plumb matters more than people think, because any lean shows badly once the paint goes on. After the cladding was up and sealed, we came back to paint the full exterior in Nebulous White. Painting after install let us coat every batten edge and seam, so no raw fiber cement was left exposed. A homeowner doing this alone often paints too soon or skips priming the cut edges, which is exactly where fiber cement fails first.
