One of the many questions that roof replacement companies like ours are asked is whether color affects the performance of asphalt shingles. Continue reading as we discuss whether color does matter, especially when investing in a new roof.

A Case for Light-Colored Shingles

Color affects the reflectivity of a surface; the lighter it is, the more likely it is to reflect sunlight. The opposite happens on a dark-colored surface; it absorbs light. That’s why it feels more comfortable to wear white or light-colored shirts outside on a sunny day than dark-colored ones. The same principle applies to roofing systems.

One of the important factors to consider when choosing a roof color is the rate of heat reflectivity. The more heat the roof can reflect, the lower the output of your home’s air conditioning system, resulting in energy savings during the summer. Asphalt shingles that are capable of retaining residual heat hours after sunset, however, can negatively impact your home’s efficiency needs.

A Case for Dark-Colored Shingles

Given the importance of roofing performance in making roof-related decisions, it can be surmised that dark-colored shingles don’t make sense in areas with warmer temperatures. In fact, dark shingles are more suitable in areas with cold climates, where the roof can retain heat to reduce the need for indoor heating. However, many homeowners across the country still choose dark shingles because of the contrast they provide to the rest of the home exteriors.

If you are looking to replace your roof at some point, you should know that you don’t have to compromise between your choice of roof color and its performance. That’s because roofing materials nowadays have reflective coatings or granules to enhance the ability of roofs to reflect heat. Choosing an asphalt shingle color doesn’t really matter as long as these features are present.
