The Full Story
Inside This Project
What did this Driftwood siding project cover?
The siding work went beyond hanging new boards. Our scope included tear-off, wall sheathing, James Hardie trim, soffit, and details around the double garage-door opening. Those parts matter because a new wall surface needs a sound backing and a clear plan for its edges. A homeowner may focus on the siding profile, but the surrounding pieces determine how complete the finished wall looks.
We kept the paint work in the same project so the primed siding would not be left as the final appearance. That also let us address nearby fascia and openings during the same visit, rather than treating them as unrelated jobs.
- The plan called for 7/16-inch OSB wall sheathing.
- Trim included 4-inch James Hardie pieces measured by linear foot.
- Soffit work included H-mold.
- The fascia scope included 10-inch wood fascia and 1x4 material.
Why use this fiber cement siding on an Austin home?
We chose 8.25-inch Primed Select Cedar Mill fiber cement siding for this replacement and paint plan. The cedar-mill texture gave the homeowner a wood-grain look, while the primed face provided a surface for the specified finish coat. Central Texas homes face long stretches of 100°+ summer heat, so material choice and paint planning belong in the same conversation. That does not make any siding maintenance-free; it means we should choose a system that fits the home and finish it as intended.
Board selection was only one part of that decision. The estimate also accounted for sheathing and trim, so the new siding could meet the garage opening and soffits as a planned assembly. Skipping those adjacent details can leave a replacement looking unfinished even when the boards themselves are new.
- The homeowner first reached out on March 7, 2024, through a friend or family member of our team.
- We inspected the home and began the estimate on May 28, 2025.
- The homeowner approved the project on June 16, 2025.
How did we approach tear-off and the wall beneath?
The scope allowed for both tear-off and double-layer tear-off. We treated removal as a separate step from installation, not as a detail hidden inside the siding line item. That distinction matters: you need to know what comes off before you can judge the surface receiving the new work.
- Wall sheathing appeared as its own part of the siding scope.
- The plan included a separate siding section rather than only trim repairs.
- Miscellaneous installation material covered the smaller pieces needed to carry out the work.
- Delivery was included so materials could reach the site during the installation window.
- The crew also had punch items and two yard-cleanup passes in its scope.
What happened around the garage, eaves, and fascia?
The edges of the house needed attention alongside the wall boards. We included a double garage-door jamb wrap, soffit work, and fascia work so those transitions were part of the siding plan. None of those items means we replaced the garage doors; the work addressed their surrounding opening.
- The garage-door jamb wrap was specified for a double opening.
- Soffit work was listed separately from the wall siding.
- Wood fascia material was included, while its painting belonged to the paint scope.
- The planned fascia and soffit painting covered surfaces up to 24 inches.
- James Hardie trim provided a defined finish at the siding edges.
Which exterior surfaces received paint?
The paint scope reached beyond the new boards. We specified Sherwin Williams SuperPaint for the siding, then included the nearby features that would remain visible against it. Painting those elements as part of the same project helped keep the finish work aligned with the siding replacement.
- The garage doors were included for painting, not replacement.
- Entry doors were listed among the surfaces to paint.
- Downspouts had their own paint item.
- Fascia and soffits were included in the exterior finish work.
- The scope also allowed for painting other surfaces measured by square footage.
How did the four on-site days fit together?
Installation began August 11, and the crew finished on August 14, 2025. Across that window, the work covered removal, new siding-related materials, exterior paint, and final punch items. We did not count the earlier inspection or approval period as installation time.
- Siding and painting were both part of this one project.
- The crew's scope included a punch-out before completion.
- Two yard-cleanup passes were planned, rather than leaving cleanup as a single unspecified task.
- August 14 was the last day of work on site.
Straight Answers
Questions About This Project
Does primed siding arrive with its final color?
No. This project's James Hardie siding was primed, and the scope called for Sherwin Williams SuperPaint over it. If you are comparing siding options, check whether a proposed board is primed for painting or comes with a finished color.
How much did this siding and painting project cost?
The combined project fell in the $20,000–$25,000 range . That range covered more than siding boards: the scope included sheathing, trim, soffit and fascia work, and painting across several exterior surfaces.
Did approval mean the crew started right away?
No. The homeowner approved the work in mid-June, and on-site installation began in August. For a project with both siding and paint, it helps to keep the planning period separate from the days the crew is at your home.
Were the doors and downspouts replaced?
No replacement of those items was listed. The exterior painting scope included the doors, garage doors, and downspouts, while the siding work included a wrap around the double garage-door jamb.
