Why did this Austin home need a new roof?

This was an insurance job. The old comp shingles had taken a beating from Central Texas hail, and the roof was no longer sealing the way it should.

Homes across the 78729 ZIP were built through the 1980s and 1990s, so many roofs in this pocket are aging out at the same time. A referral customer sent this homeowner our way.

What did the crew find during tear-off?

Pulling the old shingles told the real story. Once the comp layer came off, we could see how the deck had been drying out under years of 100-degree summer heat and pounding storms. The nailing on the old roof was inconsistent, which is common on older Austin homes and a big reason wind can lift shingles early. We reset the fasteners properly this time, using 7,200 roofing coil nails at 1 1/4 inches so every shingle bit into solid decking. That detail is the one most homeowners never see, but it decides whether a roof lasts fifteen years or thirty.

What materials did we use, and why?

We built the roof as a full GAF system, not a shingle-only swap. The Timberline HDZ SG shingle has a wide nailing zone that speeds accurate placement and improves wind hold-up, which matters when spring storms roll through.

Underneath, we layered protection that handles both heat and water:

How did we handle attic ventilation?

Good venting keeps an attic from cooking, which protects both the shingles and your cooling bill. We upgraded the exhaust with a ridge vent plus a box vent to pull hot air out.

What about the gutters?

We detached and reset the existing gutters so the new drip edge and shingle courses tucked in cleanly. Doing this the right way stops water from sneaking behind the fascia during heavy Texas downpours.
