First contact
March 21, 2024The homeowner reached out through the Austin Pro website back on March 21, 2024. They were interested in replacing aging siding on their Milwood-area home. We started scoping the job a few days later, on March 26, 2024.
Evaluation
We inspected the existing exterior and walls, noting worn cladding around the garage jambs and porch columns. The assessment confirmed the original siding was past its service life and that some sheathing would need replacement once tear-off began.
Planning & approval
April 2, 2025After reviewing the estimate and material selections, the homeowner approved the project on April 2, 2025. The scope was set for James Hardie HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill siding paired with a full Sherwin Williams Super Paint finish.
Installation
The crew removed the old siding, then installed fresh 7/16" OSB wall sheathing where needed. New 8.25" fiber cement lap boards went up next, along with wrapped columns, garage jambs, and James Hardie soffit with H-mold. Sherwin Williams Super Paint sealed the siding, fascia, soffit, and garage doors.
Completion
June 16, 2025We finished the work on June 16, 2025, running two rounds of yard cleanup and punch items to leave the site clean. The final walkthrough confirmed a fully wrapped, freshly painted exterior. The project closed on September 11, 2025.

Why did this Austin home need new siding?
Many Austin homes from the 1980s and 90s still carry original wood or hardboard siding. By now, that material has soaked up decades of moisture and swelled at the seams. This home was ready for a full replacement, not another patch job.

What did the crew find during tear-off?
Once the old siding came down, we got a clear look at the wall structure underneath. Some of the existing sheathing had softened from years of trapped moisture, which is common on Austin homes with aging exteriors and limestone soil that holds water near the foundation. That is exactly why we don't skip the layer under the siding. We installed fresh 7/16" OSB wall sheathing across the affected areas before a single plank went up. Skip that step and you build a beautiful new surface over a weak base, which is the mistake most homeowners never see coming.
What materials did we use, and why?
We went with HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill 8.25", a primed fiber cement lap siding. Fiber cement holds up to hail and 100-degree heat in ways wood simply can't. It won't warp, rot, or feed insects.

How did the exterior painting tie it together?
Once the siding and trim were set, we sealed everything with Sherwin Williams Super Paint. A primed board needs a quality topcoat to reach its full lifespan. Super Paint resists fading and moisture, so the color stays true through Austin summers.
