This siding project in Austin, TX used James Hardie HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill 8.25" fiber cement over fresh 7/16" OSB wall sheathing. First contact
June 3, 2025The homeowner found Austin Pro through an internet search and reached out on June 3, 2025. They were interested in replacing worn exterior siding and adding a covered patio to the backyard. We started scoping the project on June 6.
Evaluation
We inspected the exterior walls, existing trim, and the backyard area planned for the patio. The old cladding was aging and no longer holding paint, and the wall structure needed checking before new material went on. We also mapped where the new concrete pad and cover would sit.
Planning & approval
July 18, 2025We put together a scope covering James Hardie siding, a full Sherwin-Williams repaint, and a Structall aluminum patio cover on a new pad. The homeowner reviewed product and color selections and approved the project on July 18, 2025. That gave us time to stage materials through our suppliers before the build.
Installation
The crew started siding on August 5th, installing 7/16-inch OSB sheathing and 8.25-inch HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill boards. The paint phase followed, covering siding, fascia, soffit, shutters, garage doors, and gutters. Near the end of August we poured the concrete pad and set the aluminum patio cover a few days later.
Completion
August 25, 2025We wrapped the project on August 25, 2025, after two yard cleanups and a full punch-out walkthrough. The home now has a hail-ready fiber cement exterior, a fresh painted finish, and a shaded backyard patio.

Why did this Tanglewood Forest home need new siding?
Many homes in this pocket of 78748 went up in the 1990s, and their original cladding has taken a beating. Decades of 100-degree summers, spring hail, and cedar pollen wear down old exterior boards fast.

What did we find when we opened up the walls?
Once we started pulling old material on August 5th, we checked the wall structure underneath before anything new went on. That inspection matters more than most homeowners realize. Bad sheathing behind fresh siding is a hidden problem that shows up years later as soft spots and trapped moisture. We installed new 7/16-inch OSB wall sheathing to give the Hardie boards a flat, solid nailing base. A clean substrate is the difference between siding that lasts and siding that fails early in Austin's swing between wet springs and bone-dry summers.
What materials did we use, and why?
We clad the home in HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill lap siding at 8.25 inches wide. Fiber cement was the clear choice for this climate. It does not swell in humidity, will not feed insects, and stands up to hail far better than wood or vinyl. The Cedar Mill texture gives the look of real wood grain without the upkeep.

How did the painting phase go?
After the siding was up, we moved straight into paint. We coated the whole exterior in Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint for lasting color and UV protection. The primed Hardie boards hold that finish tightly, which is key under relentless Central Texas sun.

How was the patio cover built?
The backyard work happened in two steps near the end of the job. We poured a fresh concrete pad in late August, let it cure, then set the patio cover a few days later. The Structall Building Systems aluminum cover was chosen because it will not rot, warp, or need repainting like a wood frame would. That is a real advantage in a climate that bakes in July and floods in May.
