October 18, 2022The homeowner found us through Google Reviews and Maps, then reached out on October 18, 2022. They wanted to replace a tired exterior on their South Austin home in the 78745 area. Our first conversation focused on moving from failing wood siding to a longer-lasting fiber cement system.
Evaluation
We inspected the existing exterior and found siding that could no longer handle Austin's heat and hail. The trim also needed attention, so we planned to clad it in Hardie to match. We confirmed new sheathing would be needed for a proper, flat base.
Planning & approval
November 4, 2022We built an estimate covering James Hardie HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill 8.25", new 1/2" OSB sheathing, and a full Sherwin Williams repaint. The homeowner approved the project on November 4, 2022. Material orders were placed through ABC Supply Co. for delivery.
Installation
March 23, 2023The crew executed the main install on March 23, 2023. We set new 1/2" OSB sheathing, installed the HardiePlank siding, and clad the existing trim. Then we painted the siding, fascia, soffit up to 24 inches, and porch ceiling in satin latex.
Completion
We finished with two rounds of yard clean and a full punch-out to catch every detail. The home came out with a durable, hail-ready exterior and a crisp satin finish.

Why did this Austin home need new siding?
Older South Austin homes often run wood or hardboard siding that fails over time. Heat, hail, and moisture break down those old boards fast. This exterior was ready for a full replacement, not another patch.

What materials did we use, and why?
We chose James Hardie fiber cement in the Select Cedar Mill 8.25" profile. Fiber cement shrugs off rot, pests, and Texas heat in ways wood never could. It also holds paint longer, which matters here.

Cedar pollen and moisture are hard on wood exteriors. Fiber cement gives you the cedar mill texture while resisting all of that.
How did the exterior painting come together?
Once the siding was up, we sealed the whole home with Sherwin Williams Exterior Latex in a satin finish. Satin holds up against UV and washes clean of pollen and dust. It gave the home a crisp, uniform coat.
