Why did this Austin home need new siding?

South Austin homes from the 1980s and 1990s take a beating out here. Old wood and hardboard siding swells, splits, and traps moisture after enough hail and summer sun.

What did the crew choose, and why?

We went with James Hardie HardiePanel Vertical Siding for two reasons: durability and design. Fiber cement will not warp, rot, or feed the termites that love our limestone-soil yards. Vertical panels also gave the home a clean, contemporary line that sets it apart from the horizontal-lap houses on the block. Here in Central Texas, where afternoons push past 100 degrees and spring dumps cedar pollen on everything, that combination of toughness and low maintenance matters. It is the kind of choice a homeowner rarely regrets.

How did the porch and trim details come together?

Details make or break a re-clad. We wrapped the porch columns in matching Hardie trim so the posts read as part of the new siding, not an afterthought. The crew cut and fit each 3/4-inch piece on site for a tight, finished look. That step is where a lot of DIY siding jobs fall apart — the field panels look fine, but the trim and columns give away a rushed install.

How did the exterior painting finish the job?

Once the siding was up, we sealed and coated the whole exterior with Sherwin Williams Super Paint. That paint was picked for its UV resistance, since South Austin sun fades cheaper coatings fast.

We painted the siding, the fascia and soffit up to 24 inches, and the garage doors so every surface matched. A permit was pulled before work began to keep everything to code.
