Siding

James Hardie

This Goldthwaite project replaced worn siding with James Hardie fiber cement in the 8.25" Select Cedar Mill profile. Our crew handled a full double-layer tear off before installing the new primed HardiePlank. Fiber cement was chosen because it resists warping, rot, and hail far better than wood in Central Texas. The finished exterior looks sharp and needs little upkeep for years.

Exterior Painting

Sherwin Williams

The exterior painting phase used Sherwin Williams SuperPaint across the new siding, porch pillars, and posts. We coated every surface by the square to lock in color and protect the fiber cement. SuperPaint was picked for its fade resistance under relentless Texas sun. The home now has a uniform, weather-ready finish.

First Contact

The homeowner came to us through a customer referral, with the first contact logged on Nov 25, 2024. Early talks focused on the tired, double-layered exterior and the goal of a lasting siding replacement rather than another cover-up. The lead moved to a prospect on Dec 1, 2024.

Evaluation

We assessed the home's exterior and found two full layers of old siding hiding the sheathing. That told us a complete double-layer tear off would be needed before any new board could go up. We flagged the substrate as the priority to avoid trapped moisture common in Central Texas walls.

PLanning & Approval

We laid out the scope: a full tear off, James Hardie 8.25" Select Cedar Mill install, and a complete Sherwin Williams repaint. The homeowner approved the plan on Feb 2, 2025. Material orders were staged through ABC Supply, Lowe's, and Sherwin Williams ahead of the install date.

Installation

On Apr 2, 2025, the crew ran the double-layer tear off down to the sheathing, then installed the primed HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill. Once the boards were set, we painted all siding by the square and finished the porch pillars and posts with SuperPaint. Both trades wrapped the same day.

Completion

We handled two rounds of yard cleanup and a full punch-out to close the job clean. The finished exterior showed even cedar-grain lines and a uniform, fade-resistant coat. The project invoiced and completed on Apr 2, 2025, and closed out on Jul 21, 2025.

Project at a glance

  • Services: Siding and exterior painting
  • Location: Goldthwaite, TX 76844
  • Vendor & product: James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding
  • Material: HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill 8.25", primed
  • Paint: Sherwin Williams SuperPaint exterior
  • Timeframe: Approved Feb 2, 2025; installed and completed Apr 2, 2025
  • Standout outcome: A double-layer tear off cleared old siding for a crisp, hail-ready cedar-grain exterior

Why did this Goldthwaite home need new siding?

The old exterior had been covered over once already, leaving two layers of siding on the walls. That traps moisture and hides rot, and it never sits flat. The homeowner wanted a real fix, not another cover-up.

  • Two full layers of aging siding stacked on the walls
  • Uneven surface that would telegraph through any new install
  • No clean base for paint to adhere to
  • A referral lead first reached us back on Nov 25, 2024

What did the crew find during the tear off?

Stripping both layers off is where this job earned its scope. Our crew ran a double layer tear off plus a standard tear off, pulling everything down to the sheathing so we could see what was really there. That step matters more than homeowners expect. Central Texas walls trap heat and humidity, and hidden moisture behind old siding leads to soft spots you never catch until the wall is open. Getting the substrate clean and flat is the only way HardiePlank sits right and lasts.

  • Sheathing exposed and checked before new material went up
  • Yard cleared twice during the punch phase to keep the site safe
  • Delivery handled through ABC Supply and Lowe's

What materials did we use, and why?

We chose James Hardie HardiePlank in the 8.25" Select Cedar Mill profile for this exterior. Fiber cement is the right call in this part of Texas for real reasons. It does not warp in 100-degree summers the way wood does, and it stands up to hail far better than vinyl. The cedar-grain texture gives the home a warm, natural look without the rot and insect problems of real cedar. Primed board also holds paint tighter, which sets up the finish coat to last.

  • 8.25" Select Cedar Mill lap for a defined cedar-grain shadow line
  • Primed Select Cedar Mill boards ready for topcoat
  • Fiber cement resists cedar pollen buildup better than porous wood

How did the exterior painting go?

Once the siding was up, we coated the whole exterior with Sherwin Williams SuperPaint. We painted by the square across all siding, then hit the porch pillars and posts by hand for even coverage. SuperPaint holds its color under the sun that bakes Central Texas half the year.

  • Full siding painted per square footage
  • Porch pillars coated separately for a clean edge
  • Porch posts finished by hand
  • Paint seals the fiber cement against wind-driven rain

What were the results?

The home now wears a flat, uniform exterior with crisp cedar-grain lines and a fresh coat that fights fading. Install and paint both wrapped in a single push on Apr 2, 2025. The homeowner traded two layers of failing siding for one solid, sealed wall system.

  • Completed same day as invoicing on Apr 2, 2025
  • Final punch-out and yard cleanup closed the job clean
  • Project closed out Jul 21, 2025

Frequently asked questions

How long did the siding and painting take?

The on-site work landed on Apr 2, 2025, after approval on Feb 2, 2025. Larger tear-off jobs move fast once material is staged and the crew is set.

Why is fiber cement better than wood siding in Central Texas?

Fiber cement holds its shape through 100-degree heat and takes hail hits without denting like softer materials. Real cedar rots, warps, and feeds insects over time, so HardiePlank gives you the look without the upkeep.

What did this Goldthwaite project cost?

This full tear off, HardiePlank install, and complete repaint fell in the $50k-$60k range. Double-layer removal and full exterior painting add scope beyond a simple re-side.

Do you paint the siding right after installing it?

Yes. We used primed HardiePlank, then topcoated with Sherwin Williams SuperPaint once the boards were up. Painting on site lets us seal every cut edge and cover pillars and posts to match.
