Complete GAF Timberline HDZ SG Roof Replacement | Solar Panel Remove & Reattach on Steep 8/12 Pitch

Complete GAF Timberline HDZ SG Roof Replacement | Solar Panel Remove & Reattach on Steep 8/12 Pitch

This Round Rock roofing project replaced worn comp shingles with the GAF Timberline HDZ SG system on a steep 8/12 pitch home. We stripped the felt to the decking, added FeltBuster synthetic underlayment, and rebuilt the flashing and ridge venting. GAF was chosen for its wind and hail performance, which matters for storm-prone Central Texas. We also removed and reattached the home's solar panels and closed out the job under the GAF Golden Pledge Warranty.

The homeowner came to us through a referral from family and friends, first reaching out as a lead on February 15, 2025. That first conversation focused on visible storm wear and whether the damage would support an insurance claim.
We inspected the roof and confirmed the aging comp shingles had reached the end of their life. The steep 8/12 pitch and an existing REC Alpha solar array were noted early so we could plan the work safely. By March 11, 2025 the project moved into the prospect stage.
We built out a full GAF Timberline HDZ SG system estimate, including tear-off to decking, new flashing, ridge venting, and the solar remove-and-reattach. The scope was approved on May 5, 2025 once the insurance claim was aligned with the plan.
The crew completed the entire tear-off and reinstall on June 18, 2025. They stripped the felt to bare decking, laid down FeltBuster underlayment, and set the HDZ shingles with proper drip edge and step flashing. The REC Alpha panels were detached first and reattached once the new roof was down.
The finished roof was invoiced on June 18, 2025 and the project formally closed on July 7, 2025. The homeowner ended up with upgraded ridge venting, resecured solar panels, and full protection under the GAF Golden Pledge Warranty.
We replaced a storm-worn asphalt roof on a Round Rock home in the Fairview area, installing a new GAF Timberline HDZ SG shingle system in a single day. The homeowner ended up with a fully rebuilt roof, refreshed ventilation, and their solar array back online.
This was an insurance claim after storm damage, which is common across Round Rock. The old comp shingles had reached the end of their service life and could no longer be trusted to keep water out.
Round Rock roofs take a beating. Between 100-degree summers, spring hail, and fast-moving storms, an aging shingle roof loses granules and grip over time.
Once we pulled the old shingles, we made the call to remove the felt all the way down to the bare decking. That is not always the default, and some crews will shingle over old felt to save time. We do not, because Central Texas heat bakes old felt brittle, and any hidden soft spots or gaps in the deck stay buried where they cause leaks later. Going to bare wood let us inspect the decking, seal it properly, and start the new system clean. It costs a bit more up front, but it is the difference between a roof that lasts and one that surprises you in a few years.
We built the roof around the GAF Timberline HDZ SG shingle, backed by a full GAF component system. The HDZ line is a strong pick for our region because of its wind rating and its LayerLock design, which speeds up nailing without sacrificing hold. That matters when Round Rock storms roll through and gusts test every seam.
Underneath and around the edges, we used a matched set of GAF and metal components so nothing was left as a weak link:
The home had a REC Alpha Pure Black solar array mounted on the roof, so we planned the job around it from the start. Reroofing under existing panels is where a lot of homeowners get burned, because a roofer who is not careful can crack cells or leave mounting points leaking. We coordinated a full remove-and-reattach so the shingles went down clean underneath, then reset the panels on solid footing. Handled right, the panels come back exactly where they belong, sealed and secure.
The homeowner got a complete roof system finished in one day, protected by the GAF Golden Pledge Warranty — GAF's top coverage tier. New ridge venting also improves attic airflow, which helps cut heat buildup during those long Central Texas summers.
If your roof is showing hail bruising or lost granules, our roofing team can walk it with you and check whether an insurance claim makes sense.
The full tear-off and reinstall wrapped in a single day on June 18, 2025. The project first came in as a lead back in February and closed out in early July after the insurance process ran its course.
It pairs a strong wind rating with a nailing design that holds tight in gusty storms. For a region that sees hail and triple-digit heat, that durability helps the roof age slower and stay sealed.
This job fell in the $30,000-$40,000 range, handled as an insurance replacement. Steep pitch and the solar remove-and-reattach added to the scope beyond a standard reroof.
Yes. It is covered under the GAF Golden Pledge Warranty, the highest tier GAF offers, which backs both the materials and the workmanship.
