What We Did
James Hardie Select Cedar Mill Siding with OSB Sheathing and R-13 Insulation · Eleven NT Windows Executive Vinyl Replacement Windows
Siding
This siding project in Round Rock, TX, covered cladding, wall sheathing, insulation, and finish paint. We installed James Hardie 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill fiber cement siding. Its fiber cement construction made sense for an exterior exposed to long Central Texas summers. Sherwin Williams Super Paint and soffit painting completed the finish work.

How It Went
The Journey
From the first phone call to the final walkthrough — what actually happened on this project.
First contact
April 7, 2026The homeowner reached us through an internet search on April 7, 2026. The project covered both siding and windows, so the first discussion was about coordinating two exterior trades rather than booking a single installation day.
Evaluation
April 10, 2026We began working up the estimate on April 10, 2026. The scope covered wall sheathing, R-13 insulation, siding, paint, and replacement windows.
Planning & approval
June 6, 2026The project was approved June 6, 2026. We ordered the 11 NT Windows Executive units in mid-June; they arrived in mid-July. Planning also specified James Hardie 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill siding and Sherwin Williams SuperPaint.
Installation
We installed the windows over two days in late July, before starting the siding phase. From August 22 through August 25, the crew spent two days on siding and two days painting it. The siding scope also included wall sheathing, insulation, soffit paint, and punch work.
Completion
August 25, 2026On-site work finished August 25, 2026, after the siding paint phase, the scheduled punch work, and two yard cleanups. Our office closed out the job on September 28.

The Full Story
Inside This Project
Why did this Round Rock project include siding and windows?
The homeowner planned two exterior updates, but they did not happen in one continuous installation. We ordered 11 windows in mid-June, installed them in late July, and handled the siding next. That order matters when you read the August completion date: it marks the end of on-site work, not the day every part of the project began. The window lead time and the later siding schedule were separate parts of the same job.
Round Rock exteriors face long stretches of 100°+ summer heat, and storm season can bring hail. Those conditions make the choice of exterior materials worth discussing.
- The homeowner found us through an internet search and reached out on April 7, 2026.
- We began working up the estimate on April 10, well before either installation.
- The project was approved June 6, leaving time to order the window units.
What work was specified behind the new siding?
The siding scope called for wall sheathing, including 7/16-inch OSB, and R-13 roll-in insulation alongside the James Hardie boards. That detail matters because the finished siding is only the outer layer; this job also covered the wall materials behind it. A homeowner comparing bids could miss that difference by looking only at the siding product name.
Sheathing and insulation were part of the planned siding work, not an unexpected repair.
- The wall work covered general wall sheathing as well as 7/16-inch OSB.
- The insulation was rated R-13.
- Primed Select Cedar Mill boards were included before the finish-paint phase.
Why use Select Cedar Mill fiber cement here?
We used James Hardie 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill fiber cement siding, then painted it on site. Fiber cement was a sensible choice for a Round Rock exterior exposed to intense summer sun. The primed boards also fit the planned paint sequence; this was not a prefinished-siding job.
- The product name gives an 8.25-inch board size, not a measured exposed reveal.
- Select Cedar Mill identifies the specified siding texture.
- Siding paint and soffit paint were separate steps.
- Sherwin Williams SuperPaint was the siding paint.
A product label cannot tell you how the wall was prepared. On this job, the work also included sheathing and insulation, which is why a quote for boards alone would not describe the same scope. The final coating was another distinct step, rather than something the fiber cement arrived with.
How did the window phase fit ahead of the siding?
The NT Windows Executive units arrived in mid-July after the mid-June order. Our window crew installed the vinyl replacement windows over two days in late July, separate from the August siding work.
- We installed 11 windows.
- Executive was the selected NT Windows product line.
- Vinyl replacement windows were the specified material and installation type.
- The window phase was complete before the next exterior trade began.
That sequencing is useful if you are planning work on an occupied home. An order date is not an installation date, and a delivery does not mean a crew was on site. Here, the order, the delivery, and the installation were three separate events, and the four August days covered the siding visit, not the full period from window order to final paint.
How did the August siding and painting schedule run?
On-site siding work began August 22 and finished August 25, 2026. The crew spent two days on siding, followed by two days painting it. We kept that sequence clear in the schedule: the four days covered only the work at the house, not the earlier planning steps.
- Soffit painting was its own step, apart from the siding coating.
- The punch work included two yard cleanups plus punch items.
- Delivery was included, separate from the installation materials.
- On-site work finished on August 25.
Paint followed the cladding work because the specified boards were primed, not factory-finished. The punch items and yard cleanups also belonged to the on-site scope. Those are easy steps to leave out when describing a siding job, but they were included in this one.
What can you take from the finished scope?
This Round Rock project had separate window and siding crews and a final painted siding phase. The finished scope covered the visible cladding, specified wall materials, 11 replacement windows, soffit paint, and punch work.
- On-site work finished August 25, 2026; our office closed out the job later, on September 28.
For your own project, ask which wall materials are included before comparing siding proposals. On this job, OSB and R-13 insulation were part of the planned work. Ask the same precise questions about window count and installation timing. They can tell you more than a broad promise to finish an exterior update in a single visit.
Straight Answers
Questions About This Project
Did the siding and windows go in during the same four days?
No. The four August days covered siding and painting; the NT Windows installation happened on two earlier days in late July. The mid-June window order was a procurement step, not on-site work.
What was the budget range for this project?
This project fell in the $25k–$30k range. It was a homeowner project, not an insurance claim. The range is not a quote for another Round Rock home.
What warranty covers this work?
Coverage depends on the specific James Hardie, NT Windows, and Sherwin Williams products installed. Ask for the warranty paperwork for each.
Was the siding finish selected for a particular paint color?
We finished the siding with Sherwin Williams SuperPaint and painted the soffits as well. If you are reviewing a similar proposal, confirm the chosen color separately from the board and paint product names.
