What We Did
James Hardie Select Cedar Mill Fiber Cement Siding and Trim · 12 NT Windows Executive Vinyl Windows Installed Over Two Days
Siding
For this siding project in Austin, TX, we installed James Hardie fiber cement in the 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill profile. The scope also covered fascia, soffit, and wrapped posts. Fiber cement was a practical choice for an exterior exposed to Austin’s 100°+ summers. Sherwin Williams SuperPaint completed the painted siding and trim.

Exterior painting in Austin completed the finish planned for this McNeil siding project. We used Sherwin Williams SuperPaint on the siding. The scope also named fascia, soffit, garage doors, and two shutters. Painting those separate surfaces brought the new and existing exterior details together.

We installed NT Windows Executive vinyl windows at this McNeil home. The window work was part of a larger siding and painting project. Coordinating these trades helped the exterior details come together during the same four-day installation window. The result pairs new windows with the updated siding.

How It Went
The Journey
From the first phone call to the final walkthrough — what actually happened on this project.
First contact
March 14, 2025The homeowner found Austin Pro through an online search and reached out on March 14, 2025. They wanted to discuss an exterior project that would include siding and windows.
Evaluation
We inspected the McNeil home on March 18 and started the estimate. The assessment covered siding, 12 windows, and paint, along with details such as the fascia, soffit, garage jambs, and posts.
Planning & approval
The homeowner approved the project on March 20. We planned for James Hardie Select Cedar Mill siding, NT Windows Executive vinyl windows, and Sherwin Williams SuperPaint. The 12 windows were ordered on March 27 and arrived in mid-April.
Installation
We installed the windows over two days in late April. The siding and paint crew then worked from May 30 through June 2, covering the wall siding, trim details, and listed paint surfaces. These were separate on-site visits, not a single installation window.
Completion
The crew finished on-site work June 2. The final scope included punch items and yard cleanup alongside the completed siding and paint work. The windows had already been installed in late April.

Inside This Project
What did we assess before updating this McNeil exterior?
We inspected the home on March 18, 2025, and began putting together the estimate. This was not a siding-only scope: the work also called for windows, paint, and several trim details. That matters on an exterior project because each surface meets another at an edge or opening. A homeowner may focus first on the large wall areas, but the fascia and garage jambs affect how complete the finished work looks.
The plan also included eliminating a gable vent. That is a specific change to the exterior, not a detail to assume on every siding job. We accounted for it alongside the wall work rather than treating it as an unrelated finish item. The scope identified what we would address; it did not call for claims about hidden damage or the condition of the old materials.
- The estimate included a split double garage opening made up of two singles.
- The roofline scope covered both fascia and soffit work.
- Two shutters were included in the paint plan.
Why use fiber cement and vinyl on this Austin home?
We chose 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill fiber cement siding for the wall work. Its cedar-mill texture gives the exterior a defined look, while the material offers an alternative to wood in Austin's 100°+ summers. The scope called for primed boards, which fit the separate plan to paint the siding. Choosing a textured board did not remove the need to plan the coating and trim work around it.
The window selection followed a different need. Executive vinyl windows provided a low-maintenance frame material for the 12 openings. Around McNeil, heat and seasonal cedar pollen make exterior upkeep a practical concern. We would not promise a specific energy saving from the product name alone; that depends on the full window specifications and the home.
- The siding specification called for an 8.25-inch profile.
- The trim scope included 6-inch James Hardie fascia.
- Posts and porch columns were also listed for wrapping.
When were the windows installed?
The homeowner's 12 windows were ordered on March 27 and received in mid-April. We installed them over two days in late April, before the later siding and paint work. Keeping those dates separate matters: June 2 marks the end of the exterior project, not the day the windows went in.
- The selected window line was NT Windows Executive.
- All 12 units in this scope used vinyl frames.
- The window installation was a two-day visit, not part of the four-day May–June siding window.
How did the siding crew handle the edges and openings?
Siding installation began May 30 and continued through June 2. The crew worked beyond the broad wall sections, including the garage door jambs and post wraps. Those smaller areas take attention because they sit beside other exterior surfaces. A clean field of siding can still look unfinished if the edges are left out of the plan.
- The soffit scope specified James Hardie material with H-mold.
- A 1-by-2 component was included with the 6-inch fascia work.
- Both individual garage openings were covered by the split-double jamb-wrap scope.
- The crew's final tasks included punch items and yard cleanup.
Which surfaces received exterior paint?
Sherwin Williams SuperPaint was specified for the siding finish. The paint scope reached beyond the new boards, so the finished exterior would not stop abruptly at the trim. On a house facing Austin sun, it helps to know exactly which surfaces are included rather than assume that “paint the siding” means every nearby feature.
- The fascia and soffit paint scope included areas 25 to 36 inches wide or open soffit.
- Both garage doors were included for painting.
- The pair of shutters was listed as a separate paint item.
- Additional exterior surfaces were included by square-foot scope.
What was finished by June 2?
The crew finished its on-site work on June 2, after the May 30 start for siding and paint. The completed scope brought together the new wall siding, painted details, and windows installed earlier in the spring. The final work also included punch items and two yard-cleanup entries, so the job did not end at the last installed board.
- Siding and painting occupied a four-day on-site window.
- The finished scope included wrapped porch posts or columns.
- The gable-vent change was part of the exterior work.
