What We Did
James Hardie 8.25-Inch Select Cedar Mill Fiber Cement Siding · Sherwin Williams SuperPaint Across Siding, Eaves, Garage Doors, and Gutters
Siding
This Siding in Austin, TX, project used James Hardie 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill fiber cement boards. The scope also included 1/2-inch OSB sheathing and garage door jamb wraps. Fiber cement was a practical choice for an exterior exposed to Austin's intense summer sun. The completed work gave the planned paint finish a new siding surface.

This Exterior Painting in Austin, TX, project used Sherwin Williams SuperPaint on the new siding. Painting also covered specified fascia, soffits, garage doors, gutters, and downspouts. The soffit scope separated shallower areas from deeper or open sections so each received attention. The result was a coordinated finish across the surfaces included in the project.

Inside This Project
What did the inspection cover at this Mesa Park home?
The homeowner found us through an online search and reached out on April 25, 2025. We inspected the home and began the estimate on May 5. This was more than a board-and-paint job: the scope had to account for the garage openings, siding backing, eaves, and surfaces around the house. Keeping those areas in one plan helped us define where the siding work ended and the painting work began.
- The garage scope included a wrap for a split double opening with two single jambs.
- Fascia and soffit painting was divided into areas up to 24 inches and areas from 25 to 36 inches, or open soffits.
- The siding plan included primed Select Cedar Mill material as well as the finished board profile.
- Gutters and downspouts were included for painting by linear foot.
Why use fiber cement siding for this Austin project?
We selected 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill fiber cement siding for the specified siding work. Its textured face supplied the cedar-style appearance the project called for without making wood siding part of the scope. Austin's 100°+ summer days put exterior materials through long stretches of heat and sun. The material choice matters, but so does the surface behind it; that is why the plan also included 1/2-inch OSB sheathing. A new board alone cannot make up for backing that needs attention during installation.
- The siding portion used the James Hardie product line rather than a mix of siding brands.
- Garage door jamb wraps were included in the siding work, not treated as a separate door replacement.
- The project paired siding installation with painting instead of leaving the new boards as an unfinished exterior task.
How did the crew handle the four-day installation?
The crew worked on site from Friday, October 24, through Monday, October 27. Across that window, the work covered siding, garage jamb wraps, painting, and final punch items. That sequence gave the two trades room to complete their parts; this was not a same-day siding and paint job.
- Material delivery was included in the siding scope.
- The plan called for two yard cleanups along with punch items.
- A separate punch-out step covered remaining finish details before the crew left.
- October 27 was the last day of work at the home.
Which parts of the exterior received paint?
We used SuperPaint exterior paint on the new siding and the other surfaces named in this Mesa Park scope. Painting the nearby elements in the same project helped avoid a finished siding wall beside untouched trim. The plan also treated soffit depth as a real difference, rather than assuming every eave needed the same amount of work.
- Garage doors were included for painting, even though the doors themselves were not being replaced.
- Fascia was covered alongside the specified soffit areas.
- Gutters and downspouts received paint as part of the exterior work.
- The scope included both the siding paint item and additional exterior paint work.
What changed when the crew finished?
By October 27, the planned siding and painting work was complete on site. The visible result was a joined-up finish across the new boards and the other surfaces in the scope, including the garage area. The final cleanup and punch work mattered here: they gave the crew time to address small finish items rather than ending the project after the main installation.
- The completed project combined two trades: siding and exterior painting.
- Garage jambs had their own wrap details within the finished exterior.
- The work was completed in Mesa Park, a neighborhood with homes exposed to Austin's strong summer sun.
Straight Answers
Questions About This Project
When did the homeowner approve the work?
The homeowner approved the siding and painting project on September 4, 2025. That approval came after the May inspection and well before the crew's October visit; the months between were not days of on-site installation.
What was the budget range for this project?
The combined siding and exterior painting project fell in the $10k–$15k range. That range covered this home's listed scope, including garage jamb wraps and paint work beyond the siding itself; it is not a price for every Mesa Park house.
Does fiber cement mean the exterior needs no care?
No. James Hardie fiber cement is still an exterior surface that benefits from routine checks, and painted areas need care too. In Austin, it is sensible to clear cedar pollen from accessible painted surfaces and check the finish after hail.
Were new gutters or garage doors installed?
No replacements were included for either item. This project called for paint on the gutters, downspouts, and garage doors, plus wraps at the garage door jambs. Those details improve the finished exterior without changing the doors or the gutter system.
