Why did this North Austin home need new siding?

The existing cladding had taken years of sun, storms, and cedar pollen. Boards were fading and pulling loose in spots, and the fascia showed soft edges.

What did the crew find on site?

When we pulled sections back for inspection, the story was clear. The old material had swelled and cupped where water had worked in over the seasons, and the garage door jambs were exposed at the corners. That is a common miss on older North Austin homes. People repaint over failing wood siding instead of replacing it, so the rot keeps spreading under a fresh coat. We flagged the jambs and the 6-inch fascia line as priority fixes before any new board went up, because siding is only as good as the trim protecting its edges.

What materials did we use, and why?

We installed James Hardie 8.25" Select Cedar Mill, a primed fiber cement lap board with a natural wood-grain face. Fiber cement was the right call for this climate for a few reasons.

• It will not warp or swell in 100-degree heat the way old hardboard does
• It shrugs off hail far better than wood or vinyl
• Cedar pollen and moisture do not feed rot in fiber cement
• We paired it with 6-inch Hardie fascia (with 1x2 trim) for a matched, durable edge
• Materials were sourced through ABC Supply and Gtown Lumber and Supply

How did the installation and painting go?

The siding and paint work ran across multiple days and wrapped on September 3, 2025. Our crew wrapped both single garage door jambs, hung the primed Select Cedar Mill boards, and set the new fascia and soffit before the painters moved in. We then coated the siding, the fascia and soffit up to 24 inches, and both garage doors with Sherwin Williams SuperPaint. SuperPaint holds its color under relentless Texas UV, which matters when a fresh finish has to survive summer after summer. Two rounds of yard cleanup and punch-out closed things out.
