Siding

James Hardie

This Ranch Creek project replaced worn siding with James Hardie HardiePlank Cedar Mill in a 5.25" reveal. We chose fiber cement because it shrugs off Austin heat, hail, and cedar pollen without warping or rotting. During tear-off we found the existing sheathing was still solid, so we skipped replacing it and passed the savings on. The finished siding is durable, sharp, and built for Central Texas weather.

Exterior Painting

Sherwin Williams

Exterior painting followed the siding install within days, using Sherwin Williams products throughout. We caulked and coated the new siding by the square, then painted fascia and soffit up to 24 inches. Quality paint protects fiber cement seams from moisture and UV in the harsh Texas sun. The home now wears a smooth, even finish that resists fading.

First Contact

This homeowner found Austin Pro through an internet search and reached out on April 5, 2023. They were looking to replace aging siding on their Ranch Creek home and freshen up the exterior.

Evaluation

We assessed the existing siding and exterior condition after first contact. By April 13, 2023 the project moved to the prospect stage, with siding replacement and a full repaint identified as the scope.

PLanning & Approval

The homeowner approved the project on April 14, 2023. We planned for James Hardie HardiePlank Cedar Mill siding and a Sherwin Williams exterior paint package, including possible OSB sheathing replacement.

Installation

Siding work began in late July 2023 and ran multiple days. During tear-off we found the existing sheathing was still in great condition, so we skipped the OSB replacement and discounted the job. Painting followed shortly after the new HardiePlank was installed.

Completion

We caulked and painted every surface, finished the fascia and soffit up to 24 inches, and completed two rounds of yard cleanup and punch-out. The project was completed and invoiced on August 30, 2023, leaving a durable, freshly finished exterior.

Why did this Ranch Creek home need new siding?

Many homes in this part of Austin date to the 1980s and 2000s. Their original siding takes a beating from 100°-plus summers, spring hail, and heavy cedar pollen. This home's cladding had reached the end of its useful life.

  • Old siding showed wear that repainting alone would not fix
  • Fiber cement was chosen to resist rot, warping, and impact
  • The homeowner found us through an internet search in early April 2023

What did the crew find during tear-off?

Here is the part that saved this homeowner real money. When we pulled the first section of old siding in July, we expected to replace the sheathing underneath. That is standard on older homes, where moisture and shifting limestone soil often leave the substrate soft or rotted. But the existing sheathing was in great shape. We tested more sections and confirmed it, so we skipped the OSB replacement entirely and cut the price considerably. A lot of contractors would have swapped it anyway and charged for it.

What materials did we use, and why?

We installed James Hardie HardiePlank Cedar Mill in a 5.25-inch reveal. Fiber cement is the right call for Austin because it does not soften in extreme heat and it stands up to hail.

  • Primed Select Cedar Mill planks with a wood-grain texture
  • ABC Supply Co. handled material delivery to the site
  • Half-inch OSB sheathing was in the original scope but not needed
  • The primed surface gave paint a clean, ready base to grip

How did the exterior painting go?

Paint started within days of the siding wrapping up. We used Sherwin Williams products to caulk and coat every surface by the square. Sealing the seams matters here, because our summer sun and sudden storms punish any gap.

  • Caulk and paint applied surface-by-surface across the home
  • Fascia and soffit painted up to 24 inches
  • Two rounds of yard cleanup and punch-out items completed
  • Final finish gives an even color that resists UV fading

What were the results?

The home now has a durable, low-maintenance exterior that looks brand new. Fiber cement paired with quality paint should protect this house for decades with little upkeep.

  • Crisp, uniform exterior with sealed seams
  • Reduced cost thanks to reusable sheathing
  • Completed and invoiced August 30, 2023

Frequently asked questions

Why is fiber cement siding good for Austin homes?

It handles our climate extremes without failing. HardiePlank does not warp in 100°-plus heat, resists hail impact, and shrugs off cedar pollen and moisture that rot wood siding.

Did skipping the sheathing really lower the cost?

Yes. Because the existing sheathing was still solid, we removed the OSB replacement line and passed those savings along. This project landed in the $25k–$30k range.

How long did the whole project take?

The siding install ran across several days in late July 2023. Painting followed shortly after, and the full job was completed by August 30, 2023.

Why paint fiber cement if it comes primed?

Primer is a base coat, not a finish. A full Sherwin Williams topcoat seals the planks against UV and moisture, and it lets you pick the exact color you want.
