Why did this Rob Roy home need new siding?

The old walls had taken years of Central Texas abuse. Sun, hail, and cedar pollen had worn the surface down and left gaps behind the cladding. The homeowner wanted a fix that would last, not another repaint over failing material.

What did the crew find behind the old siding?

Once the old cladding came off, we got a clear look at the wall structure. Some sheathing had softened over time, which is common on Austin homes built to handle heat but not decades of moisture cycling. That is exactly why we do not skip this step. Re-siding over questionable sheathing is the single biggest mistake we see homeowners make, because the new wall is only as good as what sits behind it. We laid down new 7/16-inch OSB wall sheathing to give the fiber cement a flat, solid, and dry base.

What materials did we use, and why?

We chose James Hardie Select Cedar Mill lap in the 8.25-inch profile for its looks and its toughness. Fiber cement handles our climate in ways wood and vinyl simply cannot. It will not warp in 100-degree summers, and it takes a hail hit without denting or cracking.

How did the installation and painting go?
