Siding
This siding project in Austin, TX, used James Hardie 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill fiber cement boards. The scope included primed siding and porch-column wraps with trim pieces. Fiber cement was a practical choice for an exterior exposed to Austin's intense summer heat. The finished work gave the wall and porch areas a consistent siding profile.

The Full Story
Inside This Project
What did the Rattan Creek exterior project cover?
This was more than a change to the home's wall boards. During the August 10 inspection, we planned a siding-and-paint project that also reached the porch, fascia, soffit, and garage doors. Those surfaces matter because a fresh siding profile can make nearby unfinished areas stand out. The homeowner approved the combined scope on December 7, so both trades could be planned as one exterior project. Our scope named the surfaces to be painted rather than treating every part of the house as a new installation.
The plan separated the work into clear parts:
- Primed Select Cedar Mill boards for the siding areas.
- James Hardie wraps for porch posts or columns.
- Trim pieces specified at 3/4 inch for the column work.
- Painting for fascia and soffit areas up to 24 inches.
Why use primed fiber cement siding here?
We chose a primed fiber cement product for the siding work, then included paint as a separate part of the project. That distinction is easy to miss: primed boards are ready for a finish, but primer is not the final exterior color coat. In Austin, long stretches of 100°+ summer weather put exposed wall surfaces through demanding conditions. The selected boards provided the planned cedar-mill look, while the paint scope completed their exterior finish. We did not need to assume hidden damage or a particular type of old siding to make that material choice.
One detail shaped how the pieces would read together. The 8.25-inch board profile gave us a defined siding layout; the porch-column trim needed its own treatment rather than being described as another wall board. Keeping those items distinct helped us plan the finished look without overlooking the porch.
How did we pair siding installation with painting?
The crew worked on site from February 25 through February 28. This was a four-day siding and painting job, not a same-day replacement. The sequence had to account for both the primed material and the surfaces receiving exterior paint. That coordination matters on a project where siding, porch details, and painted trim all meet in the homeowner's view.
The work covered several different tasks:
- Installing the specified Select Cedar Mill fiber cement siding.
- Wrapping porch columns with James Hardie material and trim.
- Painting the siding with SuperPaint exterior paint.
- Addressing fascia, soffit, and garage-door painting within the same project.
Which surfaces received exterior paint?
The siding was a major part of the paint scope, but it was not the only surface. We also included the fascia, soffit, and garage doors. That matters on a home exterior because boards and adjacent painted areas are seen together, especially around roof edges and the front approach. The plan identified those surfaces separately, so the crew could address them without suggesting the garage doors themselves were being replaced.
The scope gave the painters practical boundaries:
- The fascia and soffit item covered areas up to 24 inches.
- Garage doors were listed for painting, not new-door installation.
- Additional painting was measured by surface area where applicable.
- The selected finish was an exterior paint rather than an unfinished primer coat.
What happened before the crew arrived?
The homeowner found us through Yelp and reached out on August 8, 2023. We inspected the home two days later and began the estimate for siding and exterior painting. Approval came on December 7, well before the February installation. That gap belongs to planning the project; it should not be counted as days of on-site construction.
Each date describes a different part of the homeowner's experience:
- August 8: The homeowner made the first contact.
- August 10: We inspected the exterior and started the estimate.
- December 7: The homeowner approved the proposed work.
- February 28: The crew finished its work at the home.
How was the exterior work finished?
The scope included punch work and two yard cleanups, not just installation and paint. Those tasks matter after siding work because trim pieces, packaging, and other job materials should not be left around the yard. The crew completed the on-site work on February 28. For this project, that is the finish date—not the earlier approval date or the day installation began.
The final scope addressed details beyond the main wall areas:
- Punch items for the siding and painting work.
- Yard cleanup listed twice during the project.
- Finished porch-column wraps with their specified trim pieces.
- Painted roof-edge areas and garage doors as part of the exterior scope.
Straight Answers
Questions About This Project
How long should I plan for a siding and painting job like this?
This Rattan Creek installation took four on-site days. The homeowner had approved the project more than two months earlier, so planning time and crew time were separate.
Did the project include replacing the garage doors?
No. Garage doors were part of the exterior painting scope; the listed work did not call for new doors.
What was the project's price range?
The combined siding and exterior painting project fell in the $25k–$30k range. That range covered this home's selected materials and stated scope, not a standard price for every Austin house.
Does fiber cement make siding hailproof?
No exterior siding should be treated as hailproof. After a Central Texas hailstorm, check the siding, porch trim, and painted surfaces for visible impact before deciding whether repairs are needed.
