This project included new Simonton Daylight Max vinyl windows across the home in South Austin, TX. First contact
February 21, 2023The homeowner found Austin Pro through an internet search and reached out on February 21, 2023. Within two days, by February 23, the project moved into the prospect stage. Early talks centered on replacing failing siding and old windows on a South Austin home in the 78748 area.
Evaluation
We inspected the exterior and found swollen wood siding, soft fascia, and a worn front-entry flat roof. The windows were due for replacement, and the porch ceiling needed new panels. These findings shaped a combined siding, window, and paint scope with a small roofing repair.
Planning & approval
April 12, 2023The scope was approved on April 12, 2023. We locked in James Hardie HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill and ordered the replacement windows in late April. Material selections included the porch ceiling panels, 6-inch Hardie fascia, and Sherwin Williams paint colors.
Installation
Windows arrived in late June and were installed in August so every opening could be flashed and sealed first. Siding began in early September using the primed 8.25-inch Cedar Mill lap. The crew also replaced the front-entry modified bitumen roof and painted the fascia, soffit, and garage doors across multiple days.
Completion
September 18, 2023We invoiced and completed the project on September 18, 2023. A final walkthrough covered punch items, and two yard cleanups left the site clean. The job officially closed on January 18, 2024, with the home fully re-clad, sealed, and repainted.

Why did this South Austin home need new siding?
The old cladding had taken years of abuse from 100-degree summers and spring storms. Wood siding in this part of Austin tends to cup, split, and soak up moisture over time. This home was ready for a material that holds its shape.

What did we choose, and why fiber cement?
We went with James Hardie HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill at 8.25 inches wide. Fiber cement was the clear winner here for a simple reason. Wood swells and rots in our humidity, and vinyl can distort against a west-facing wall in July heat. Hardie holds a straight line through 100-degree afternoons and stands up to hail that would dent softer products. The Cedar Mill texture also gives you the look of real cedar grain without the constant upkeep that real cedar demands in this climate.

How did the window and siding sequence work?
Windows drive the schedule on a job like this. We ordered them in late April, and they arrived in late June after a standard manufacturing lead time. That gap is normal for replacement windows, so we planned around it. We installed the windows in August, well before a single siding board went up. Setting them first let us flash each opening and tuck the new Hardie tight to the frames, which is how you keep wind-driven rain out for the long haul.

What else did the crew handle on site?
The front entry had a small flat roof that needed attention before we could call the exterior done. We tore off and replaced it with modified bitumen, using a CertainTeed Flintlastic SBS self-adhered system. That kind of low-slope detail is easy to overlook, but skipping it invites leaks right at the entry.
