What We Did
James Hardie 8.25-Inch Select Cedar Mill Fiber Cement Siding · Sherwin Williams SuperPaint Siding and Exterior Detail Finish
Siding
This Siding in Austin, TX project used James Hardie fiber cement in the 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill profile. The scope included 50 linear feet of fascia replacement and half-inch OSB sheathing. Primed boards gave us a surface ready for the planned exterior paint. Garage-door jamb wrap helped finish the openings alongside the new siding.

This Exterior Painting in Austin, TX project followed the siding installation. We used Sherwin Williams SuperPaint on the siding and painted the fascia, soffit, and pergola. Painting the primed boards on site let the new cladding and adjacent surfaces share a finished look. The crew completed the exterior work over four on-site days.

Inside This Project
Why did this Village At Anderson Mill home need more than a coat of paint?
The homeowner reached out on December 16, 2024, after seeing one of our yard signs. We inspected the home two days later and planned the siding and painting as connected work. A fresh coat alone would not have covered the listed fascia replacement or the sheathing included in this project. Those pieces called for exterior work before the final color went on.
- The approved scope called for 8.25-inch Primed Select Cedar Mill siding, not paint over the existing cladding.
- It also covered wrap at the garage-door jamb, where the new exterior meets an opening.
- Existing gutter disposal was included by linear foot. That is separate from installing new gutters.
What did the exterior scope tell us to address first?
The clearest example was the fascia: this job called for replacing 50 linear feet of 2-by-6 material. Half-inch OSB sheathing was included, too. On an exterior job, those details affect how we approach the siding work; they are not finishing touches a painter can solve with another coat. I would rather account for them before the visible surfaces go up than leave a homeowner thinking new paint covers every part of an exterior repair.
The garage opening needed attention as well. The scope included a split-double jamb wrap described as two singles, plus garage-door jamb wrap. That work addressed the trim around the opening; it was not a garage-door replacement. Keeping that distinction clear matters when you compare exterior bids.
- Fascia and soffit work formed part of the siding scope, not just the paint list.
- The job included disposal of existing gutters where removal was required.
- Garage-jamb details had their own line items rather than being treated as siding boards.
Why use primed fiber cement siding here?
We used James Hardie fiber cement in the Select Cedar Mill profile because the project called for both new cladding and a site-painted finish. The boards arrived primed, giving the painting crew a planned next step after installation. The 8.25-inch profile also set the look of the new siding; choosing a board is about the finished appearance as well as its material. In Austin’s 100°+ summers, the practical choice is to plan the cladding, trim, and coating together rather than judge a siding sample on its own.
Fiber cement did not remove the need to deal with the fascia and sheathing in this scope. That is an easy point to miss. A durable-looking board cannot do the work of the material behind or beside it. Our plan kept those separate tasks visible while giving the homeowner one finished exterior project.
- The homeowner approved the siding and painting plan on January 7, 2025.
- Select Cedar Mill supplied the specified wood-grain appearance.
- The separate paint scope covered the installed siding rather than relying on primer as the finish.
How did the four days on site unfold?
The crew began on March 11 and finished on March 14, 2025. That was a multi-day siding and painting job, not a same-day installation. The sequence had to leave room for the listed fascia, sheathing, and jamb work alongside the new boards and painted surfaces.
- Siding work included the James Hardie boards and the 50-linear-foot fascia replacement.
- The garage opening received its specified jamb wrap details.
- The painting scope extended beyond the cladding to fascia and soffit surfaces up to 24 inches.
- The crew also had a pergola on the paint list.
- Punch items and two yard cleanups were included before the on-site work ended.
A four-day window tells you more than a completion date alone. This scope crossed two trades and included details around openings, fascia, and the pergola. For a homeowner planning access around the house, those areas matter just as much as the main siding walls.
Which surfaces received exterior paint?
Sherwin Williams SuperPaint went on the siding. The paint scope also covered fascia and soffit, other specified exterior surfaces, and the pergola. Painting these areas as part of the same project helped the new cladding sit naturally beside the details that remained visible around it.
Cedar pollen is a familiar Austin nuisance, so a painted exterior still needs ordinary cleaning over time. This job’s result was a finished set of surfaces, not a promise that paint eliminates upkeep. Hail can also affect exterior materials; after a storm, it is worth checking the siding and trim for visible damage rather than assuming any coating makes them immune.
- The siding paint was specified as SuperPaint, while the pergola had its own paint item.
- Fascia and soffit painting accompanied the replacement and trim work.
- The paint list included additional surfaces measured by square foot.
What was complete when the crew left?
By March 14, the siding, exterior painting, and listed finish items were complete on site. The work joined the new fiber cement cladding with painted trim and pergola surfaces, while the yard-cleanup items addressed the areas used during installation. The result was a broader exterior update than repainting alone could have delivered.
- The final scope included punch-out work in addition to the main trades.
- Gutter disposal and garage-jamb wrap were handled as distinct exterior details.
- The project took place in Austin’s Village At Anderson Mill neighborhood, ZIP 78750.
Straight Answers
Questions About This Project
Did the December visit count toward the installation time?
No. The homeowner contacted us on December 16, 2024, and we inspected the home on December 18. The four on-site days began in March, after the homeowner approved the project on January 7.
What was the price range for this siding and painting project?
The combined project fell in the $25,000–$30,000 range. That range covers this home’s siding and exterior painting scope, including details such as fascia and garage-jamb work; it is not a fixed price for another house.
Were new gutters part of the finished work?
The scope covered disposal of existing gutters by linear foot, not a new gutter installation. If you are planning both siding and new gutters, ask for each task to be identified separately.
Was the garage door replaced?
No garage-door replacement was part of this project. The work at that opening was jamb wrap, including the split-double detail listed as two singles.
