Why did this home need new siding?

Older exterior cladding in Central Texas takes a beating. Summer heat swells and dries the boards, and spring hail chips paint and cracks weaker materials.

This home was a good candidate for a full fiber cement upgrade rather than a patch job.

What did we find behind the old siding?

Once the old cladding came down, we inspected the wall assembly before setting a single new board. We chose to install fresh 7/16" OSB wall sheathing across the affected walls. That step matters more than most homeowners realize. Fiber cement is heavy and unforgiving, so it needs a flat, sound nailing surface to sit right and stay right. Skip the sheathing check and you get waves, popped fasteners, and gaps that let water in during a hard Texas downpour.

What materials did we use, and why?

We went with James Hardie 8.25" Select Cedar Mill in a primed finish. The wide 8.25" exposure gives the home a bolder, modern lap line. Fiber cement was the right call for this ZIP code for a simple reason.

It does not warp in 100°+ heat, it shrugs off hail far better than wood, and cedar pollen wipes off a painted surface without staining. Limestone soil and big seasonal swings are hard on exteriors here, and this material was built for exactly that.

How did we finish and protect the siding?

Every board and trim detail was coated in Sherwin Williams SuperPaint. Painting fiber cement properly is what locks in the weather resistance and keeps the color true through years of UV. We also painted the existing gutters and downspouts so the whole exterior reads as one clean job.

What garage door did we install?

We set a new 16' x 7' non-insulated DoorLink garage door in the same opening. Then we wrapped the jamb as a double and added a vinyl jamb seal to close out drafts and driving rain.

How did the installation go?
