Why did this Westmorland home need new siding?

The old cladding had taken years of abuse from Austin's climate. Sun-baked walls, hail dings, and moisture had worn it thin. The homeowner wanted a fix that would last, not a patch.

What did we find when we inspected the home?

Our crew walked the whole exterior before pulling a single board. That first-hand look matters because Austin's climate hides problems behind old siding. We often find soft spots and gaps that trap the cedar pollen and moisture our springs are famous for. On this home, we planned to close in an old window and door opening completely, and cut a fresh opening with a 5-foot header. Those framing changes are where a rushed contractor gets it wrong, so we took the time to square everything before new siding touched the wall.

What materials did we use, and why?

We chose James Hardie HardiePlank in the Select Cedar Mill texture at an 8.25-inch width. Fiber cement is the workhorse of Central Texas siding for good reason. It does not warp in 100-degree heat, it resists hail impact, and it will not feed rot or insects the way wood does. The wider 8.25-inch reveal gives the home a bolder, more modern shadow line than standard lap. We ran a mix of primed and factory-primed Select Cedar Mill boards to keep the surface paint-ready and consistent.

How did the paint work go?

Once the siding was up, painting sealed the job and pulled the look together. We coated the exterior in Sherwin Williams Super Paint, a finish built to hold color under harsh UV. A good film is your home's first weather layer, not just a color choice.
