Why did this Austin home need new siding?

Older homes around Windermere Meadows take a beating from our climate. The client wanted a low-maintenance exterior that would hold up better than the original cladding.

James Hardie fiber cement was the clear pick for a few reasons:

• It resists cracking and swelling through 100-degree summers
• It stands up to hail far better than thin wood or vinyl
• Insects and rot don't touch it the way they do cedar
• The Cedar Mill texture keeps a classic wood-grain look without the upkeep

What did the crew find on site?

When we pulled measurements and looked closely at the trim details, the posts and garage jambs needed proper wrapping to seal out moisture. That kind of detail gets missed on a lot of jobs. Water sneaks behind unwrapped columns and rots the framing over time, especially where our limestone soil holds moisture near the foundation. We planned to wrap the 4x4 posts and both garage door jambs before any siding went up. Getting those edges sealed first is what keeps a fiber cement job watertight for decades.

What materials and finishes did we use?

The siding is primed Select Cedar Mill, then coated in Sherwin Williams SuperPaint for a tough, even finish. Painting on top of the factory prime gives better adhesion and richer color that lasts through UV and cedar pollen season.

How did the windows tie into the project?

Provia windows went in alongside the siding to seal the home tighter. Better window frames cut air leaks that push up cooling costs during our long, hot summers. They also help keep fine cedar pollen out in the spring, which matters for anyone sensitive to it. Pairing new windows with fresh siding meant we could flash and trim everything together for a cleaner result.

How did installation and cleanup go?

We completed the full scope on March 21, 2024, and the job closed out on April 4. Materials came in through ABC Supply, Lansing Building Products, and Home Depot to keep the crew stocked.
