Why did this Lakeway home need new siding?

The old exterior had reached the end of its life. Some wall sections were soft, and the surface no longer held paint well.

Fiber cement was the right call for this address. Here is what drove the decision:

• Lakeway sits on limestone soil with long stretches of 100-degree heat
• Wood and composite siding warp and swell in that kind of climate
• Spring hail is a real threat here, and thin materials dent easily
• Cedar pollen season coats everything, so a washable surface matters

What did the crew find during teardown?

Once the old cladding came off, we found the OSB underneath had taken on moisture and lost its bite. Fiber cement is heavy, and it needs a flat, sound base to fasten into. If you nail new siding over soft sheathing, the fasteners pull loose and the boards wave over time. We removed about 10 squares of that failing OSB and installed fresh 7/16" sheathing before a single plank went up. That step is invisible when the job is done, but it is the difference between siding that lasts decades and siding that fails in a few years.

What materials went on the home?

We used HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill lap in the 8.25" profile. The Cedar Mill texture gives a soft woodgrain look without the upkeep of real cedar.

Key parts of the job:

• New 7/16" OSB wall sheathing where the old panels were removed
• Double garage door jamb wrap for a clean, sealed edge
• Removed and reset the corrugated roofing to work behind it

How did the painting phase go?

The repaint followed close on the heels of the siding install. We coated every exterior surface with Sherwin Williams SuperPaint, which holds its color under relentless Texas sun.

Prep came first, and that is where most DIY jobs go wrong. Old paint on the garage doors and porch ceiling was peeling, so we stripped it back before priming. Painting fresh coats over failing paint just traps the problem underneath. Once the surfaces were sound, we rolled and sprayed the siding, then hit the trim and details by hand.

• Fascia and soffit up to 24"
• Both garage doors and a set of two shutters
• Gutters and downspouts, priced per linear foot
• The porch ceiling

What was the final result?

The home now has a sealed, weather-ready exterior and a uniform finish from the porch to the roofline. Two rounds of yard cleanup and punch items closed out the job with nothing left behind.
