Why did this Hogeye home need new siding?

The old cladding had taken years of Central Texas abuse. Between hail hits, cedar pollen buildup, and summers over 100 degrees, it was worn past the point of patching.

What did we find once we opened the walls?

Pulling the old siding told the real story. The sheathing underneath had softened in spots, so we didn't gamble on it. We installed brand-new 7/16" OSB wall sheathing across the whole home before a single board of siding went up. That extra step matters here. Manor's limestone soil and heat cycles put constant stress on a wall assembly, and a solid, uniform substrate is what keeps fiber cement flat and fastened for decades. Skipping it is the most common shortcut we see, and it always comes back to haunt the homeowner.

Why James Hardie Cedar Mill for this house?

We chose the Primed Select Cedar Mill 8.25" lap because it delivers a real wood-grain look without wood's weaknesses. Fiber cement won't rot, warp, or feed the moisture that cedar pollen loves to trap.

Why replace the windows first?

Sequence is everything on a combined job. We set the new windows through NT Windows before the siding, so each unit could be flashed and sealed against the fresh sheathing. Doing it in that order stops water from ever sneaking behind the cladding. It also means the siding laps neatly over the window flanges instead of butting awkwardly against them. A homeowner who reverses this order often ends up with leaks at the corners and no easy way to fix them. Tight, well-flashed windows also hold cooled air inside through the worst of an Austin-area summer.

How did installation day go?

With planning done, the crew handled the full scope in a focused push on August 21, 2025. Windows went in, then sheathing, then siding, then paint and punch-out.
