The pitch also means water sheds fast, which makes the underlayment and flashing details even more important. Skip those, and steep roofs leak at every penetration. We took the time to get the pipe flashing and ridge caps sealed right.
We built the roof as a full GAF system, not just shingles on felt. Timberline HDZ SG shingles sit on Tiger Paw synthetic underlayment, with StormGuard ice and water shield at the vulnerable spots. The synthetic underlayment holds up to Central Texas heat far better than old-style felt, which can dry out and crack when attic temps climb past 100 degrees. We also added a mix of Cobra ridge venting and a slant-back box vent to move hot air out of the attic. Balanced airflow keeps the shingles cooler from below and helps them last their full life.
The gutters went in as a clean one-day job after the roof was finished. We ran 5-inch gutters with 3x4 downspouts, sized to handle the heavy, fast rain that hits Round Rock in storm season. Oversized downspouts also clog less when cedar pollen and leaf grit wash off the roof.
