Why did this Circle C Ranch home need new siding?

Many homes in this pocket of Austin date to the 1990s and early 2000s. The original wood-based siding had reached the end of its life, with spots that had soaked up moisture and started to soften.

What did we find once we opened up the walls?

Once the old cladding came off, we could inspect the sheathing behind it. Parts of the 7/16" OSB had taken on water over the years and lost their strength, so we cut those sections out and installed fresh wall sheathing. We also pulled and reset the gutters so the new drip edge and siding could tuck in correctly. A homeowner who skips this step often traps moisture behind brand-new siding, which quietly rots the wall from the inside. Doing it right meant replacing the 2x2 metal drip edge and making sure water sheds away from the structure, not into it.

What materials did we use, and why?

We went with James Hardie HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill in the 8.25" profile. Fiber cement is the smart choice for Central Texas because it does not warp in extreme heat and holds up to hail far better than wood or vinyl.

• JH 6" fascia with a 1x2 to finish the roofline cleanly
• One window opening was closed in completely and re-sided to match
• Garage door jambs were wrapped, including a split double set up as two singles

Fiber cement also resists the cedar pollen and moisture swings that beat up softer materials here. It gives the homeowner decades of service with far less fuss.

How did the exterior painting come together?

Once the siding was set, we moved to paint. The whole exterior got coated in Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint, chosen for how well it holds color under relentless Texas sun.

• Siding, fascia, and soffit painted up to 24 inches
• Gutters, downspouts, and porch ceiling coated by linear foot
• Garage doors and entry doors painted to match
• Porch columns finished for a consistent, tied-together look

How long did the whole project take?

The siding install ran across several days starting in late April, since a full re-clad plus sheathing repair is not a one-day job. Paint followed shortly after, and we closed out the exterior work on May 26, 2026. We ran two rounds of yard cleanup and punch items so the property was left spotless.
