Why did this Maple Run home need new siding?

Many homes in this pocket of southwest Austin were built in the 1980s and 1990s. Their original cladding tends to fade, crack, and pull away from the wall over time. That opens the door to moisture and pests.

This home showed the usual wear you would expect from decades of sun and storms.

What did we find once we opened the walls?

Siding jobs always tell you the truth once the old material comes off. On this home, we pulled the existing cladding and inspected the wall behind it before anything new went up. That is the step most homeowners never see, and it is where a job is won or lost. We chose to install fresh 7/16-inch OSB wall sheathing to give the new HardiePlank a flat, dependable surface to fasten to. Skip that base and you get wavy walls, loose panels, and gaps that let water in.

What materials did we use, and why?

We went with James Hardie HardiePlank in the Select Cedar Mill texture, 8.25 inches wide. Fiber cement is the right call for Austin. It does not warp in 100-degree summers, it handles hail far better than wood, and it will not feed the mold that our humid stretches encourage. The Select Cedar Mill grain gives you the look of real cedar without the upkeep. Cedar pollen season alone is hard enough here without adding wood rot to your list.

How did the gutter work fit in?

New siding and old gutters do not belong on the same house. We removed and disposed of the existing gutters by the linear foot, then reset the run against the refreshed fascia. Good drainage matters a lot on Austin's limestone soil, where standing water near the slab can shift a foundation.

How did the installation go?

Crews worked the home over four days, from July 17 through July 20, 2026, with paint following the siding install. We sheathed, hung the HardiePlank, wrapped the garage door jambs, and set the gutters. Two yard cleanups and a punch-out closed things out.
