Siding

James Hardie

This Maple Run project used James Hardie HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill siding in the 8.25" width. We installed it over new 1/2" OSB sheathing for a solid, flat base. Fiber cement was the right call for Austin's 100-plus degree summers and hail, since it won't swell or crack like wood. The finished home reads clean and modern with true cedar-grain texture.

Exterior Painting

Sherwin Williams

The exterior painting phase covered the new siding, fascia and soffit up to 24", and both garage doors with Sherwin Williams coatings. We chose paint rated for heavy UV and moisture to hold color through Central Texas summers. The scope included prep and disposal so the surfaces took the finish evenly. The result is a uniform, durable exterior that resists fading and pollen staining.

First Contact

The homeowner found Austin Pro through an internet search and reached out on June 13, 2023. The early conversation focused on replacing aging exterior siding on a Maple Run home and giving the front some added character.

Evaluation

We inspected the existing siding, sheathing condition, and trim around the garage and front shelf. The old cladding had worn down after decades of Austin heat and storms, and the wall base needed new sheathing for a proper install.

PLanning & Approval

The project moved to prospect status on January 8, 2024, and was approved the very next day, January 9. We finalized the James Hardie Select Cedar Mill selection, the Sherwin Williams paint scope, and custom touches like the faux cedar beam tails and new gable vent.

Installation

The crew installed 1/2" OSB sheathing, then hung the 8.25" HardiePlank across the home in mid-March. Painting followed once the siding was set, covering the new planks, fascia, soffit, and both garage doors. The team also fit the roughly 20" x 28" vinyl gable vent above the garage.

Completion

The punch-out walkthrough took place March 28, 2024, confirming clean seams and even paint coverage. The project was completed and invoiced on April 19, 2024.

We replaced the exterior of this 1980s-era home in Maple Run with James Hardie fiber cement siding, then painted the whole envelope in Sherwin Williams color. The house went from tired and mismatched to sharp, sealed, and built for Austin weather.

Why did this Maple Run home need new siding?

Maple Run is full of homes from the 1980s and '90s, and the original siding here had reached the end of its life. Sun and moisture had done their work over decades.

  • Central Texas summers push past 100 degrees for weeks at a time
  • Spring hail and driving rain wear down older wood and composite siding
  • Cedar pollen and humidity leave staining and swelling on aging surfaces

What did the crew find on site?

When we pulled the old cladding, we wanted a clean, flat base before a single plank went up. That's where the sheathing matters. We installed fresh 1/2" OSB sheathing across the walls so the new siding had solid, consistent backing. Skip that step and you get waves, gaps, and fasteners that don't bite properly. A flat substrate is also what lets fiber cement lay tight and look straight from the street. Getting this part right is the difference between siding that lasts and siding that looks off in two years.

What materials did we use, and why?

We went with James Hardie HardiePlank in the Select Cedar Mill texture, 8.25" wide. Fiber cement is engineered for exactly the climate Austin throws at a house. Wood siding swells, cracks, and feeds rot in our heat and humidity. Fiber cement holds its shape and shrugs off hail far better than composite or vinyl. The Cedar Mill grain gives real wood character without the maintenance headache.

  • 8.25" primed Select Cedar Mill lap profile for a bold, modern reveal
  • New vinyl gable vent, about 20" x 28", installed above the garage door
  • Faux cedar beam tails added under the sloped front shelf for detail
  • Old material hauled off and disposed as part of the scope

How did the exterior painting come together?

Once the siding was set, we brought in the paint. Primed HardiePlank takes a topcoat beautifully, so the timing let the new surface cure and get sealed properly. We used Sherwin Williams coatings built to handle UV and moisture.

  • Painted all new siding for a uniform, sealed finish
  • Coated fascia and soffit up to 24"
  • Refreshed both garage doors to match the new palette
  • Prep and cleanup handled before the final coat went on

What were the results?

The home now reads as one clean, deliberate exterior instead of a patchwork of worn materials. Color is even, the grain texture catches light nicely, and every seam sits flush. Best of all, the homeowner won't be fighting rot or fade for a very long time.

  • Punch-out walkthrough completed March 28, 2024
  • Custom beam-tail detail gives the front real curb appeal
  • Sealed envelope that stands up to Austin sun and spring storms

Frequently asked questions

Why is fiber cement a good fit for Austin homes?

It doesn't swell, warp, or rot the way wood does in our heat and humidity. It also holds up to hail and resists cedar pollen staining better than older siding.

How long did this project take?

We installed the siding over several days in mid-March, then followed with paint. The punch-out happened March 28, and the job was completed and invoiced by April 19, 2024.

What did a project like this cost?

This full re-side and repaint fell in the $30k–$40k range. The exact number depends on square footage, trim details, and prep needs.

Do you handle both siding and painting on one job?

Yes. Doing both together means the new siding gets sealed correctly and the whole exterior matches, without juggling two separate contractors.
