Why did this Milwood home need new siding?

Many Milwood homes were built in the 1980s and 1990s. Their original wood or composite siding rarely survives decades of Austin sun, hail, and cedar pollen without swelling or cracking.

This homeowner had come back to us after a past project, so trust was already there.

What did we find during the inspection?

Once we got close, the wear was clear on the older cladding and around the trim details. The porch columns and the double garage door jambs both needed rebuilding, not just a fresh coat of paint.

We planned to add new 1/2" OSB sheathing where the substrate had weakened. That step matters more than most homeowners think. Skip it, and even premium siding can telegraph waves or fail to hold fasteners over time. Solid sheathing gives the fiber cement a flat, stable surface, which is exactly what keeps a Hardie job looking straight ten years down the road.

What materials did we use, and why?

We installed 8.25" HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill, a fiber cement lap siding with a subtle woodgrain face. Fiber cement is the right call for Austin because it shrugs off the things that kill wood siding.

How did the install and painting come together?

Siding work began in late May and ran across several days. The main on-site push landed June 7 through June 10, with exterior painting starting right behind the siding crew.

We used Sherwin Williams SuperPaint over the full exterior. Painting the fascia, soffit, gutters, and porch ceiling in one pass ties everything together and seals the new material.

What were the final results?
