Siding

James Hardie

This Austin siding project used James Hardie Select Cedar Mill fiber cement in a 5.25-inch lap profile. We tore off the old cladding, installed new 7/16-inch OSB sheathing, and added R-13 roll-in insulation. Fiber cement resists hail, rot, and the intense heat that breaks down wood siding here. The finished walls were coated in Sherwin Williams Super Paint for lasting color.

Windows

NT Windows

For the windows, we installed NT Executive Vinyl replacement units from NT Windows. Vinyl frames stand up to Austin's 100-degree summers without swelling or warping. The new units seal tighter than the home's older windows, cutting drafts and cedar pollen leaks. Homeowners get lower energy bills and a quieter, cleaner interior.

First Contact

The homeowner found us through an internet search and reached out on Sept 19, 2025. They wanted to replace worn siding and aging windows on their Hyde Park home. We set up a visit to walk the exterior and talk through options.

Evaluation

During the assessment, we inspected the existing cladding, wall sheathing, and windows. We found sheathing that needed full replacement and gaps letting in heat and cedar pollen. We measured the walls and confirmed the scope for both siding and window work.

PLanning & Approval

We built an estimate covering James Hardie Select Cedar Mill siding, NT Executive Vinyl windows, insulation, and paint. The homeowner approved the project on Sept 25, 2025. We then pulled the required City of Austin permit before scheduling the crew.

Installation

The crew tore off the old siding, installed 7/16-inch OSB sheathing, and added R-13 roll-in insulation. They hung the 5.25-inch Select Cedar Mill siding, set the NT vinyl windows, and painted with Sherwin Williams Super Paint. Fascia, soffit, gutters, shutters, and gable vents were all addressed.

Completion

We ran two yard cleanups and a full punch-out to finish strong. The project was completed and invoiced on Jan 8, 2026, then closed on Feb 19, 2026. The home came away with a sealed, hail-ready exterior backed by James Hardie's product warranty.

Siding & Windows in Hyde Park, Austin | Austin Pro

We re-sided a 1950s Hyde Park home in Austin, TX with James Hardie fiber cement and swapped its tired windows for new NT vinyl units. The whole exterior was rebuilt, insulated, and repainted in a single, well-planned push.

Project at a glance

  • Services: Siding and Windows
  • Location: Hyde Park, Austin, TX (78751)
  • Vendor & product: James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding; NT Windows Executive Vinyl
  • Material: James Hardie Select Cedar Mill 5.25" lap siding
  • Timeframe: Approved Sept 25, 2025; completed Jan 8, 2026
  • Standout outcome: A fully re-clad, re-insulated, hail-ready exterior

Why did this Austin home need new siding?

Older homes near 51st Street take a beating here. Summers push past 100 degrees, spring brings hail, and cedar pollen finds every gap. The original cladding was worn and no longer sealing the walls well.

  • Removed old siding down to the framing
  • Found sheathing that needed full replacement
  • Added gutters repainting to match the new look
  • Sealed gaps that let heat and pollen inside

What materials did we use, and why?

We chose James Hardie Select Cedar Mill in a 5.25-inch profile for its strength and clean wood-grain look. Fiber cement shrugs off hail and won't rot or warp in Central Texas heat. It's simply the most durable siding for this climate.

  • 5.25" Select Cedar Mill primed fiber cement lap siding
  • New 7/16" OSB wall sheathing for a solid, flat base
  • R-13 roll-in insulation to fight the summer heat load
  • Sherwin Williams Super Paint for lasting, fade-resistant color
  • Replaced and painted vinyl gable vents

How did the window replacement go?

We installed NT Executive Vinyl replacement windows alongside the siding work. Vinyl frames don't swell or warp when temperatures climb past 100 degrees. The new units seal tight, so drafts and cedar pollen stay outside.

  • NT Executive Vinyl replacement windows throughout
  • Tighter seals for lower cooling bills
  • Better sound control on a busy street
  • Coordinated with the siding tear-off for a clean fit

How did the installation come together?

The crew handled tear-off, sheathing, insulation, siding, windows, and paint in a tight sequence. We pulled a City of Austin permit before work began. Materials came from ABC Supply, Lowe's, McCoys, and local lumber yards.

  • Pulled and passed the City of Austin permit
  • Painted fascia and soffit up to 24 inches
  • Painted gutters and downspouts per linear foot
  • Installed shutters and gable vents
  • Ran two yard cleanups plus a full punch-out

What were the results?

The home now has a sealed, insulated, hail-resistant shell built for decades of Texas weather. Fresh Cedar Mill siding, crisp paint, and new windows transformed the curb appeal. Everything was completed and invoiced on Jan 8, 2026.

  • Complete exterior re-clad with fiber cement
  • Energy-efficient vinyl windows installed
  • Uniform Sherwin Williams finish across siding and trim
  • Project value in the $50k–$60k range

Frequently asked questions

Why is James Hardie siding good for Austin homes?

Fiber cement handles our 100-degree summers, spring hail, and heavy cedar pollen far better than wood. It won't rot, warp, or feed termites, which matters for older homes on limestone soil.

How long did this project take?

The job was approved on Sept 25, 2025 and completed on Jan 8, 2026. Retail exterior projects of this size run over several weeks once permits and materials are set.

What did this siding and windows project cost?

This project fell in the $50k–$60k range. That covered siding, sheathing, insulation, NT vinyl windows, paint, gutters repainting, permits, and cleanup.

Do the new windows really lower energy bills?

Yes. The NT Executive Vinyl units seal tighter than aging windows and pair with new R-13 insulation. Together they cut heat gain during Austin's brutal summers. Want the same for your home? Reach out to Austin Pro.
