Why did this Quail Creek home need new siding?

Quail Creek is full of homes built decades ago, and the original cladding here had run its course. The old boards had soaked up years of Austin storms and swelling summer heat.

What did the crew find behind the old siding?

Stripping siding always tells the real story, and this home was no exception. Once the old cladding came down, the wall substrate underneath needed attention before anything new could go up. We spec'd 7/16" OSB wall sheathing across the exposed walls to give the new siding a flat, solid nailing base. Skipping that step is the most common mistake we see on DIY re-siding jobs. Fiber cement is heavy and unforgiving, so it needs a true, stable surface or the boards telegraph every dip in the old wall.

What materials did we use, and why?

We installed James Hardie HardiePlank in the 8.25" Select Cedar Mill profile. It gives a wood-grain look without the rot, splitting, or repainting that real cedar demands in this climate.

Fiber cement earns its keep in Central Texas. It stands up to hail far better than vinyl, and it won't warp when the mercury sits above 100 degrees for weeks. Cedar pollen and humidity don't feed it either, so you get years before the surface asks for anything. That durability is why we steer Quail Creek homeowners toward Hardie over softer siding.

How did the painting stage go?

Once the siding was set, we moved into paint with Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint over two days. Working on primed Hardie means the finish bonds tight and lays down even. We coated far more than just the walls.
