Siding

James Hardie

This Round Rock project swapped tired siding for James Hardie Select Cedar Mill fiber cement in an 8.25" board width. We installed fresh 7/16" OSB wall sheathing first to correct the substrate underneath. Fiber cement was chosen because it holds up to 100°+ summers and hail far better than wood. The finished walls give the Riverlawn home a durable, textured cedar look with no warping worries.

Exterior Painting

Sherwin Williams

The exterior painting phase used Sherwin Williams SuperPaint across siding, fascia, soffit, and stucco. We also coated the gutters, downspouts, wooden overhangs, and porch ceiling for a fully unified finish. Painting the primed Hardie boards locks in color and adds a moisture barrier. The Round Rock home now reads clean and consistent from every angle.

First Contact

The homeowner reached out through our website on April 23, 2026. They wanted to replace failing siding and refresh the home's exterior color in one project. We set up an on-site visit to see the walls in person.

Evaluation

During the evaluation on April 25, 2026, we inspected the existing siding and the substrate beneath it. We found wear from years of heat cycling and areas where the wall sheathing needed replacement. That shaped the scope for both the siding and paint work.

PLanning & Approval

We walked the homeowner through James Hardie Select Cedar Mill options and Sherwin Williams paint selections. The plan included new OSB sheathing where needed. The project was approved on April 28, 2026.

Installation

On-site work ran from late May to early June. The crew tore off the old siding, installed 7/16" OSB wall sheathing, then hung the 8.25" Select Cedar Mill boards over two days. Painting with Sherwin Williams SuperPaint followed shortly after.

Completion

We finished on-site work on June 5, 2026, with a final punch-out and yard cleanup. The walkthrough confirmed even paint coverage and solid siding across the home. James Hardie and Sherwin Williams warranties back the materials, plus our workmanship.

Why did this Riverlawn home need new siding?

The old siding had reached the end of its life. Round Rock homes from the '90s often show soft spots, cracks, and paint that peels after years of heat cycling. This exterior was no different.

  • Original boards showed wear from repeated 100°+ summers
  • Substrate underneath needed correction before new siding
  • The homeowner wanted a look that would hold up long-term

What did the crew find behind the old siding?

Once we pulled the old material, the wall sheathing told the real story. Sections of the original substrate were no longer solid enough to hold fasteners well. That is a common surprise on older Round Rock homes, and it is exactly why we never skip the tear-off inspection. Fastening new fiber cement to weak sheathing would undo all the durability you paid for. We installed fresh 7/16" OSB wall sheathing across those areas to give every board a firm, level anchor.

  • Full tear-off exposed the existing wall structure
  • New OSB replaced the compromised sections
  • Two rounds of yard cleanup and punch kept the site tidy

What materials did we use, and why?

We chose James Hardie Select Cedar Mill in an 8.25" reveal for this home. Fiber cement handles our climate in ways wood and vinyl cannot. It will not warp in extreme heat, and it resists the hail that rolls through Central Texas each spring. The cedar-mill texture also gives the walls a natural wood grain without the rot or insect risk that real cedar brings. For a home surrounded by limestone soil and big temperature swings, that stability matters.

  • 8.25" primed Select Cedar Mill boards for a bold, textured line
  • Primed factory finish for better paint adhesion
  • Delivered through ABC Supply for the fiber cement order

How did the exterior painting come together?

After the siding went up, we coated the full exterior with Sherwin Williams SuperPaint. The paint does more than add color. On primed fiber cement, it seals the surface and adds a moisture layer that helps the boards last even longer.

  • Painted siding, stucco, and wooden overhangs
  • Coated fascia and soffit up to 24"
  • Painted gutters, downspouts, and the porch ceiling for a unified finish

What were the results?

The home went from tired and patchy to crisp and consistent. Every surface now shares the same clean tone, and the fiber cement gives Riverlawn a low-maintenance exterior for years ahead. On-site work wrapped on June 5, 2026.

  • Textured cedar-mill walls with no warping worries
  • Fully sealed, uniform paint across all exterior trim
  • A final punch-out pass before the walkthrough

Frequently asked questions

How long did the siding and painting take?

Siding install took about two days, and painting followed shortly after.

Why is fiber cement a good fit for Round Rock?

It stands up to our 100°+ summers, spring hail, and heavy cedar pollen far better than wood. It also will not rot or attract insects, which suits older homes on limestone soil.

What did this project cost?

This retail project fell in the $10k to $15k range. Final pricing depends on square footage, sheathing repairs, and the paint scope.

Do the siding and paint carry a warranty?

James Hardie backs its fiber cement products, and Sherwin Williams SuperPaint carries its own coverage. We also stand behind our install workmanship if anything needs attention.
