Siding

James Hardie

This Tin Roof Cove project was a full James Hardie siding replacement in the 8.25" HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill profile. We rebuilt the wall system with 7/16" OSB sheathing before hanging the new fiber cement boards. Hardie was chosen because it holds up to Round Rock's 100-degree summers and hail far better than the old cladding. We finished with Sherwin Williams Super Paint for a lasting, uniform color.

GAF

We tore off the aging composition roof and installed a GAF Timberline HDZ SG shingle system in two days. The build included FeltBuster synthetic underlayment, StormGuard ice and water shield, and a Cobra rigid ridge vent for airflow. A steep 8/12 pitch on a two-story home meant extra access work and safety setup. The finished roof carries GAF's Golden Pledge warranty, the strongest coverage they offer.

First Contact

The homeowner first reached out through our Facebook and Instagram pages on October 26, 2023. They had storm and age-related damage to both the siding and roof and wanted a contractor who could handle the full exterior under one insurance claim.

Evaluation

We moved the lead to a prospect on November 1, 2023, and inspected the home in Tin Roof Cove. Our walk-through documented the failing cladding, worn comp shingles, and the steep 8/12 two-story roof pitch that would shape the scope.

PLanning & Approval

We built out the full James Hardie and GAF estimate and worked it through the insurance approval. The project was approved on December 22, 2023, with permits pulled before any work began.

Installation

Crews installed the 8.25" HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill siding over new 7/16" OSB sheathing across several days in early March, then painted with Sherwin Williams Super Paint. Once siding was done, the team tore off and rebuilt the roof with GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in two days.

Completion

We finished with new gutters, minor window repairs, two yard cleanups, and a full punch-out. The project completed on April 29, 2024, was invoiced May 21, and closed on June 13, with the roof under GAF's Golden Pledge warranty.

Why did this Round Rock home need new siding?

The original cladding had taken years of abuse from Central Texas weather. Hail, hard sun, and swings between wet and bone-dry seasons had left it worn and failing in spots. Fiber cement was the clear fix for a long-term repair.

  • Existing panels showed weathering typical of homes built in the 1990s and 2000s
  • The insurance scope called for a full James Hardie replacement, not a patch
  • Cedar pollen and heat cycles had dulled and stressed the old finish

What did the crew find behind the old siding?

Once we pulled the old boards, the wall sheathing told the real story. We installed fresh 7/16" OSB wall sheathing where the substrate needed it, because siding is only as good as what sits behind it. Homeowners often assume new siding alone fixes moisture problems, but skipping the sheathing check leaves weak spots that fail again in a few seasons. We took our time here, working over several days in early March before touching the roof. That sequence matters, so nothing gets damaged during the tear-off phase above.

What materials did we use, and why?

We went with James Hardie HardiePlank in the 8.25" Select Cedar Mill profile. That width gives a bold shadow line and the Cedar Mill texture reads like real wood without wood's upkeep. Fiber cement won't warp, crack, or feed pests the way older materials do.

  • 8.25" Primed Select Cedar Mill boards for the main wall runs
  • Sherwin Williams Super Paint applied for a durable, even topcoat
  • Fascia, soffit, garage door jambs, doors, and two shutters all painted to match
  • Fiber cement stands up to the region's 100-degree summers and limestone-dry soil movement

How did the roof replacement go?

After the siding cured, we moved fast to the roof and wrapped it in two days. We tore off the old comp shingles, hauled them away, and built a full GAF system from the deck up. The 8/12 pitch on a two-story home meant steep-slope access charges and extra safety rigging.

  • GAF Timberline HDZ SG architectural shingles as the main field
  • FeltBuster synthetic underlayment across 10 squares
  • StormGuard ice and water shield in valleys and vulnerable areas
  • ProStart starter strip, Z-Ridge caps, and a Cobra rigid ridge vent for exhaust
  • Galvanized steel drip edge and modified bitumen work on the low-slope section

What were the results?

The home came out with a matched, freshly painted exterior and a roof rated for the hail and wind Round Rock sees each spring. We also handled a full gutter remove-and-replace and minor window repairs to close out the scope.

  • Two yard cleanups plus a full punch-out before final walkthrough
  • Permits pulled and closed with the city
  • Roof protected under the GAF Golden Pledge warranty, GAF's top tier

Frequently asked questions

Why is James Hardie siding a good fit for Round Rock?

Fiber cement handles the region's extreme heat, sudden hail, and heavy cedar pollen without warping or rotting. It also resists the moisture swings that come with our limestone-heavy soil.

How long did the whole project take?

The siding install and painting ran over several days in early March. The roof replacement followed and took just two days, with final completion on April 29, 2024.

Was this project covered by insurance?

Yes. This was an insurance claim, and the scope covered both the siding and roof. The total landed in the $50,000 to $60,000 range across all trades.

What warranty comes with the new roof?

The GAF Timberline HDZ system is backed by the GAF Golden Pledge warranty. It's the strongest coverage GAF offers and requires a certified installer to qualify.
