Why did this Jester Estates home need new siding?

Many homes in this pocket of northwest Austin date to the 1980s and 1990s. Their original siding starts to swell, crack, and peel after decades of sun and storms. This client found us through an internet search in early May and wanted a permanent fix.

What did the crew find behind the old siding?

Once the old boards came down, we got a real look at the wall structure. The existing sheathing had soft spots and uneven planes that would have telegraphed through any new siding. That is the part homeowners rarely see coming. If you nail fresh boards over a wavy base, the finished wall looks rippled no matter how good the material is. So we installed new 7/16-inch OSB wall sheathing across the affected sections to reset a flat, solid surface before a single Hardie board went up.

What materials did we use, and why?

We went with James Hardie HardiePlank in the Select Cedar Mill texture at a 6.25-inch reveal. Fiber cement was the clear pick for this climate. It will not rot, warp, or feed the moisture that wood siding traps during our humid spring storms.

How did the painting go?

Paint followed once the siding was set and clean. We coated the primed boards with Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint, which grips fiber cement well and holds color against harsh UV. The pre-primed Hardie surface meant the topcoat laid down smooth and even.
