This Austin siding project replaced aging exterior boards with James Hardie Select Cedar Mill lap siding at 8.25 inches. We wrapped the home in Tyvek ThermaWrap LE and a breathable vapor barrier before installing the fiber cement. Hardie was chosen because it resists warping, hail dents, and rot in Central Texas weather. New 6-inch Hardie fascia and seamless gutters finished the exterior shell.

The exterior painting phase followed the siding with Sherwin Williams coatings across the home. Crews painted fascia and soffit up to 24 inches, both garage doors, and a set of two shutters. Primed Hardie boards took the topcoat cleanly for even color and strong adhesion. The finish protects the new surfaces and gives the whole facade a fresh, unified appearance.
The homeowner found Austin Pro through an internet search and reached out in June 2022. The lead came in on June 20, and we moved to a prospect conversation just two days later on June 22. Early talks focused on replacing aging exterior boards with a tougher, low-maintenance material.
We inspected the home's exterior in Bauerle Ranch and reviewed the existing siding, fascia, and gutters. The old cladding showed weather wear typical of early-2000s south Austin homes, and the trim needed replacement. We also checked the wall sheathing to plan for any OSB repairs before new siding.
We built out a full scope covering James Hardie Select Cedar Mill siding, new fascia, seamless gutters, and exterior painting. The homeowner approved the project on June 29, 2022. Product selections included the 8.25-inch primed profile and Sherwin Williams coatings for the finish.
We installed OSB sheathing where needed, wrapped the home in Tyvek ThermaWrap LE and a breathable vapor barrier, then hung the Hardie boards and 6-inch fascia. New seamless gutters and downspouts followed, with exterior painting completed after the siding was set.
On-site work wrapped on September 20, 2022, followed by two yard cleanups and a full punch-out. We walked the exterior to confirm the paint on the fascia, garage doors, and shutters looked clean and even.

A breathable vapor barrier went over that, which lets the wall dry out instead of trapping moisture against the framing. In Austin's humid summers, that drying path matters more than people expect. Skip it, and you can get rot hiding under brand-new siding.
We installed James Hardie Select Cedar Mill lap siding in the 8.25-inch profile. The primed boards give paint a strong surface to grip. Fiber cement was picked for one big reason: it holds up to Austin weather in ways wood and vinyl cannot.
With new fascia going on, it made sense to redo the drainage at the same time. We removed the old gutters and installed fresh 6-inch seamless aluminum runs. New gutters protect the fresh siding by moving water away from the walls and limestone-heavy soil around the foundation.
Once the siding cured, our painters brought it all together with Sherwin Williams coatings. Painting followed the install, not the other way around, so every surface was clean and ready. The primed Hardie boards took the topcoat evenly for solid adhesion and consistent color.
Siding installation ran across multiple days in late August, with paint following after the boards were set.
Fiber cement handles our climate swings without warping, cracking, or feeding rot. It also resists hail impact and holds paint longer than wood, which cuts down repaints over the years.
This full siding, gutter, and exterior painting package fell in the $25,000 to $30,000 range. Scope, home size, and material choices all move that number, so every quote is built to the specific house.
