What We Did

James Hardie 8.25-Inch Select Cedar Mill Fiber Cement Siding · Sherwin Williams Exterior Painting with Garage-Jamb Wraps

Siding

This Siding in Austin, TX project included wall sheathing, garage-door jamb wraps, and new cladding. We used James Hardie 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill fiber cement siding. Its primed surface let us paint the siding as part of the same exterior project. The finished work addressed the walls and the details around the garage openings.

Inside This Project

What did we account for before replacing the siding?

The homeowner found us through an online search and reached out on July 24, 2024. I inspected the exterior on July 26 and started the estimate. The scope called for wall sheathing as well as siding, so I planned for work beneath the visible boards. That matters: fresh siding can improve the look of a wall, but it does not take the place of a suitable surface behind it.

The garage also needed careful planning. This home had a split-double garage-door arrangement with two single openings. Wrapping those jambs was part of the siding work, not a detail to leave for paint alone. On a project like this, the boards and the edges around openings need to be considered together.

  • The homeowner approved the siding and painting plan on August 1, 2024.
  • The siding portion was in the $15,000–$20,000 value range.
  • The exterior painting portion was in the $2,000–$5,000 value range.
  • This was a homeowner-funded project rather than an insurance roofing job.

Why use fiber cement and include wall sheathing?

We chose the primed Select Cedar Mill profile for this Austin siding job. Fiber cement gave us the wood-grain look specified for the home, while the primed boards could be painted during the exterior work. Central Texas summers often reach 100°F or more, so material choice matters on exposed walls. I would not confuse the siding's 8.25-inch product width with the amount of wall each course covers; installation overlap affects that measurement.

The plan also included 7/16-inch OSB wall sheathing. That is a separate part of the wall assembly, not a substitute for the finished siding. Keeping those roles clear helped us plan the work in the right order: address the wall surface, fit the cladding, then finish the surfaces scheduled for paint. A fresh coat cannot solve a sheathing issue behind a board.

  • The specified siding had a Select Cedar Mill texture rather than a smooth face.
  • Primed boards were included in the material scope.
  • The garage-door jamb wraps required attention at both single openings.
  • Wall sheathing and siding were distinct parts of the installation plan.

How did the four days of on-site work go?

The crew worked from September 6 through September 9. That window covered the siding, garage-jamb, and painting work; it was not a one-day installation. We also allowed for punch work and yard cleanup rather than treating the last board as the end of the job.

  • The crew's scope included wall sheathing and 7/16-inch OSB.
  • New 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill siding formed the main wall finish.
  • Jamb-wrap work covered the split-double garage-door setup.
  • Two yard cleanups were included alongside punch items.
  • The crew finished its on-site work on September 9, 2024.

Which parts of the exterior received paint?

The painting scope went beyond the new siding. We used Sherwin Williams Super Paint for the siding and included the fascia, soffit, garage doors, and entry doors in the exterior plan. Painting the adjoining surfaces helped the new cladding sit naturally beside the home's existing openings.

  • Fascia and soffit painting was scoped for areas up to 24 inches.
  • Garage-door painting was separate from the jamb-wrap work.
  • Entry doors were included among the surfaces to paint.
  • The siding was primed material, then painted as part of this project.
  • Exterior painting had its own scope alongside the siding installation.

What was different about the finished exterior?

The change was more than a new wall color. The home received fiber cement cladding, planned sheathing work, finished garage jambs, and paint across several visible surfaces. We closed out the on-site work with punch items and yard cleanup, so the result was a completed exterior project rather than siding left waiting for another trade.

  • The garage openings received jamb-wrap work tied to the siding scope.
  • Painted doors and garage doors were part of the final exterior finish.
  • The last on-site day followed a four-day installation window.
  • The project covered two services in Cherry Creek, not a full-home remodel.

Straight Answers

Questions About This Project

How long was it between approval and installation?

The homeowner approved the project on August 1, and on-site work began September 6. That was about five weeks for planning before the four-day installation window; it was not five weeks of construction at the home.

What was the overall project value range?

The combined siding and exterior painting project fell in the $20,000–$25,000 range. That covers the two services together, including the specified garage-jamb and paint work.

Does 8.25 inches describe how much wall each siding board covers?

No. On this James Hardie product, 8.25 inches identifies the board width. The visible coverage depends on how the boards overlap, so it should not be read as the exposed height of each course.
