What We Did
James Hardie 8.25-Inch Select Cedar Mill Fiber Cement Siding · Sherwin Williams SuperPaint Across Siding, Trim, and Porch Features
Siding
This Siding project in Austin, TX, used James Hardie fiber cement in an 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill profile. The scope included 7/16-inch OSB wall sheathing and work around a gable vent. Fiber cement was a practical choice for an exterior exposed to Austin’s long, hot summers. The finished siding gave the Cherry Creek home a consistent cedar-textured appearance.

This Windows project in Austin included Pella vinyl replacement windows. We planned the window work alongside new siding and exterior paint. That kept the openings in view while the surrounding exterior was updated. The completed project combined the replacement windows with the home’s other exterior improvements.

This Exterior Painting project in Austin, TX, used Sherwin Williams SuperPaint on the new siding. We also painted the fascia, soffit, porch ceiling, columns, shutters, gutters, and downspouts. Covering those details helped the new cladding fit the rest of the exterior. The result was a coordinated finish across the home’s visible surfaces.

Inside This Project
Why did this Cherry Creek home need more than a siding change?
The homeowner reached out after an online search on November 18, 2025. We inspected the home the next day and began an estimate that covered siding, windows, and paint. Those trades affect nearby parts of an exterior, so it made sense to consider them together rather than treat the new siding as an isolated surface.
The painting scope went well beyond the wall boards. It included the fascia and soffit, porch ceiling and columns, two shutters, and the gutters and downspouts. Fresh cladding next to those unpainted features would have left the exterior looking unfinished. Planning the paint at the same time let us account for the full set of surfaces the homeowner would see from the yard.
What did we account for beneath the new siding?
The siding plan included 7/16-inch OSB wall sheathing, not just new boards on the outside. That distinction matters: siding is the visible layer, while sheathing is part of the wall assembly behind it. We also had to remove and frame in a gable vent as part of the exterior work. A homeowner comparing siding proposals could easily miss those less visible tasks if they looked only at the board style.
We kept the vent work and wall sheathing in the same plan as the cladding so each part had a clear place in the installation. The scope also called for installing shutters and gable vents. Those details take care at the edges of a siding job, where a broad wall meets smaller openings and attachments. The goal was a complete exterior project, not simply a change in wall color.
Which siding and windows were selected for this Austin project?
We used James Hardie fiber cement siding in an 8.25-inch Select Cedar Mill profile. Its textured face gives the wall a cedar-like look without choosing wood siding for Austin’s 100°+ summer heat. The project also included Pella vinyl replacement windows, so the wall and window work were considered together.
- The siding scope listed both Select Cedar Mill boards and primed Select Cedar Mill material.
- The specified board width was 8.25 inches.
- Pella supplied the vinyl replacement windows for this project.
- The homeowner approved the combined project on December 3, 2025.
How did the crew handle the four days on site?
Installation ran from April 27 through April 30, 2026. During that window, the crew worked through the wall sheathing, gable vent framing, siding, and related exterior details. We treated the vent and shutter work as part of the same exterior job, not as small tasks to ignore once the large wall areas were covered. That sequence kept the focus on the whole elevation.
Windows were also part of the project, alongside siding and paint. Coordinating those trades matters because a finished wall has to make sense around every opening, not only across its open stretches. The scope included two yard cleanups and punch items before the crew finished on April 30. On a multi-trade job, that final pass is where small exterior details get the same attention as the main materials.
What exterior surfaces received paint?
The painting plan used Sherwin Williams SuperPaint for the siding and covered more than the new boards. We included the trim and porch areas so the finish would carry across parts of the home that sit beside the cladding. Gutters and downspouts were included as painted surfaces, rather than left out of the exterior plan.
- Fascia and soffit painting extended to areas up to 24 inches wide.
- The porch ceiling and porch columns were included.
- Two shutters were part of the paint scope.
- The plan also called for painting gutters and downspouts by linear foot.
What was the finished result for the Cherry Creek home?
The completed work brought fiber cement siding, vinyl replacement windows, and painted exterior features into one project. The new siding supplied the main wall finish; paint carried that work across the smaller parts of the exterior. For the homeowner, the result was a more consistent view of the house, from the wall boards to the porch and trim.
- The crew finished its on-site work on April 30, 2026.
- The final scope included punch items and a second yard cleanup.
- Gable vent and shutter installation formed part of the exterior work.
- The project covered three trades rather than siding alone.
Straight Answers
Questions About This Project
How long did installation take at this Cherry Creek home?
The on-site work took four days, from April 27 to April 30, 2026. The November inspection and December approval happened earlier; they were not installation days.
Why choose fiber cement for siding in Austin?
For this home, the homeowner selected James Hardie fiber cement with a Select Cedar Mill texture. It delivered the specified cedar-style appearance while using a different material from wood for Austin’s hot summers.
Did the project include work beyond siding and paint?
Yes. Pella vinyl replacement windows were the third service, and the siding scope included OSB wall sheathing and gable vent framing. Those items are easy to overlook if you focus only on the visible boards and paint.
What was the project’s overall price range?
The combined siding, windows, and exterior painting project fell in the $40k–$50k range. That range covers all three services, not just the siding portion.
