Why did this Austin home need new siding?

The old siding had reached the end of its life. Years of hard summers and spring hail left it soft, cracked, and letting moisture reach the wall behind it. This 78723 home sits in an established Austin neighborhood where 1980s and 1990s builds are common.

What did we find once the old siding came off?

The tear-off told the real story. Under the top layer sat a second, older layer of siding, so we ran a double-layer tear-off to get down to the studs. That extra step matters, because you can never trust siding installed over a hidden problem.

What we found underneath was sheathing past its prime. Rather than reuse it, we installed new 7/16" OSB wall sheathing across the whole home. Fresh sheathing gives the fiber cement a flat, sound surface to fasten to, and it seals up gaps where Austin's wind-driven rain used to sneak in. Skip this step and even the best siding will telegraph every dip and soft spot behind it.

What materials did we use, and why?

We went with James Hardie Select Cedar Mill 8.25" lap siding. It carries the look of real cedar grain but won't warp, swell, or feed the rot that plagues wood in our climate.

• Boards came primed, then topcoated on site

Fiber cement earns its keep in Central Texas. It holds up to 100°-plus summers without buckling, takes hail far better than wood or vinyl, and doesn't soften when cedar pollen and spring storms settle into the seams.

How did the installation go?

Tear-off, sheathing, siding, fascia, and soffit all moved in sequence so no wall sat open overnight. The crew completed the full scope on November 12, 2025.

• Two rounds of yard cleanup and punch items closed out the job

What did the finished home look like?

The walls, trim, and eaves now read as one clean, painted surface. We finished the siding in Sherwin Williams Super Paint, which locks color into the fiber cement and stands up to UV.
