Why did this home need new siding?

Older Wimberley homes take a beating from sun, wind-driven rain, and the wide swings between 100-degree afternoons and cool Hill Country nights. This exterior had reached the point where patching no longer made sense.

The homeowner wanted a clean, unified look and a material that would hold up for decades. That pointed straight to fiber cement.

What did the crew find and change on site?

Two spots on this home needed real carpentry before a single plank went up. There was an old double-door opening on one wall and a side door we needed to relocate. Rather than leave awkward gaps, our crew reframed both areas so the siding could run clean across them.

We took the door removed from the side of the home and reused it on the garden shed attached to the carport. That saved a good door from the landfill and gave the shed a proper entry. We then framed up the double-door wall so it would side over as if the opening never existed. The gable vents were reframed to accept siding, too — a small detail most crews skip, and one that leaves visible seams if you get it wrong.

What materials went on the home, and why?

We installed HardiePlank Select Cedar Mill in the 8.25" width. Fiber cement was the clear pick for a Wimberley home that sits in full sun and faces cedar pollen every winter.

Here's the reasoning. Real cedar looks great on day one, but it moves, splits, and needs constant upkeep in this climate. Fiber cement gives you that same woodgrain texture without soaking up moisture or feeding rot. It also stands up to hail far better than wood or vinyl, which matters when a Hill Country storm rolls through. The 8.25" plank keeps the reveal generous, so the finished walls look substantial rather than busy.

How were the porch ceilings and posts finished?

Ceilings and columns are where a siding job either looks custom or looks rushed. We used two different James Hardie panel styles here to fit each space.

The front porch got a beaded porch ceiling panel for a traditional, finished feel. The carport section got a woodgrain panel instead, which suits that more utilitarian space. Both came in 4' x 8' sheets and tie into the wrapped posts.

How was everything painted and finished?

Every siding surface got Sherwin Williams SuperPaint for a durable, uniform coat. We also painted the fascia, soffit, garage doors, and entry doors to bring the whole exterior together.

Painting after install lets us seal cut edges and blend the salvaged and reframed areas so nothing stands out. The whole exterior finish now reads as one deliberate design.
